GUWAHATI: The strategically important Bhupen Hazarika bridge in Assam that evoked sharp reaction from China after it was opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26 is reportedly under threat.

Confirming the threat perception, Assam Police additional director-general of police (special branch) Pallab Bhattacharya, said, "Recently we have received open source intelligence inputs suggesting threats to the bridge. Being an inter-state bridge, its significance is huge."

He added that deployment on the bridge has been increased for securing the bridge.

A source said that discussions with Centre are on for handing over the security of the bridge to the CISF.

The 9.15 km long bridge, the country's longest, can take Indian troops with heavy artillery right up to China's doorstep in its southern boundary with India in Arunachal Pradesh in the shortest possible time.

China , on May 28, asked India to be "cautious" and exercise "restraint" over building infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh, the Indian state which Beijing's claims to be its own.

Defence analysts say that the bridge, besides being designed to withstand earthquakes of high magnitude in Zone V risk zones in which the state is located, is also capable of supporting movement of tanks and heavy artillery and it is not an easy task to damage the structure.

"During war time, yes, China will definitely target the bridge as well as our other vital installations. Our forces will also target installations in China. Otherwise, it is difficult to even make a small crater with explosives. We have our repair provisions in place with which we can within the shortest possible time restore movement of our troops and vehicles on the bridge," an analyst said.

This bridge gives Army the logistic advantage that ensures movement of troops and heavy equipment to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) quicker, smoother and easier. Using military parlance, military experts said the bridge will make "intra-crops adjustment of troops" faster and facilitate swift troop build-ups matching Chinese strength in minimum time.

Most of Indian troops in the northeast are China-centric and like on the Pakistan border, the troops here too have problems of mobilization, but not any longer now.

Sir, China has no leverage over us.
There is nothing China can do to us. On other hand, they are denying us any co-operation in any matter of our national interest.

So, you see, this mythical "pressure" that people assume China is putting on us does not exist.

Pressure in a sense that they have countered your "territorial concerns" with theirs .

Makes no difference.
We are not getting Askshai Chin and they are not getting Arunachal Pradesh & Tibet will be with China. Both sides know these facts and everything else is posturing and for public consumption.

Therefore the mythical pressure does not exist because for any pressure to work, there must be an offer of relief in case of give & take. here China is not offering anything to us. So, I don't see how any of this would ever be considered as pressure.

I would love to see photo/video of 100 T-72s rumbling through the bridge.
