NEW DELHI: Lockheed Martin offered India a new combat jet, F-21, on Wednesday to be made locally, in a bid to win a large military order worth over $15 billion.

The U.S. defence firm had earlier offered its F-16 fighter used by countries around the world for the Indian air force's ongoing competition for 114 planes to be made in India.

But Lockheed, unveiling the plan at an airshow in the southern city of Bengaluru, said it was offering India a new plane configured for its needs.

"The F-21 is different, inside and out,” Vivek Lall, vice president of Strategy and Business Development for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, said in a statement.

The company will build the plane in collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems, the firm said.

Looks like a nice option for the Indians, a compromise between the F16 and F22

Corporate India will make sure India gets this!!!

They want to make money too!! They wont let HAL gulp all the money

This still doesn't compete with the Rafale or Typhoon.

but we dont have money to buy those two in large numbers thats why MMRCA was scrapped.

its a nice design, good enough to mass produce and powerful enough to stand toe-to-toe against heavy multi role fighters like MKI and Rafale/Typhoon. with help of local suppliers, Israel and France we can make many changes in the American design if we want to.

This might be considered as a replacement of LCA program.

The MMRCA wasn't scrapped due to lack of money. The deal failed because of problems with the terms and conditions. If money was a problem, then we wouldn't have bought the 36 Rafales the very next year for nearly $9B. We will in fact be going for a 2nd tranche of 36 jets before the 2nd MMRCA tender is done.

The F-16 or now the F-21 is a huge downgrade compared to the Rafale/Typhoon.

And no, the Americans won't allow foreign interference in their design.

This might be considered as a replacement of LCA program.

Nope. MMRCA is for twin engine jets, Gripen E and F-21 are merely participants.

I think you should look at the all-new LCA Mk2 design that has been revealed.

Pardon ... but that's the best joke for today! :laughcry:

It is a nicely souped up F-16 with some fancy details but it has nothing in common with a F-22.

IMO it is however only a fancy plan to rip of the Indians by selling the old F-16 production line and make as much $$$$$$$ as possible.

This would effectively mean death of MCA...

Nope. Rather, the F-21 and Gripen E are like India in the Olympics, just participants.

IMO it is however only a fancy plan to rip of the Indians by selling the old F-16 production line and make as much $$$$$$$ as possible.

That most definitely is their plan.

Everyone is offering everything... but IAF want Rafale... never ever get into this trap that we don't have enough money... there is a reason because of which current Rafale deal in highly secretive...

There is something called URGENT... look at the number of modern jets in IAF arsenal... and you would understand that there is ENOUGH ROOM for 150+ foreign jets... and Rafale is that jet... with meagre chances for EF...

Lol, my comment was made from a Pakistani perspective; your observation was very obvious to us hence my position. :)
