I agree. In fact I am surprised it went as bad as it did, especially regarding the border war. I thought something could have been worked out between China and Vietnam over the latter's desire to have control over the former Indochina territories, but in a peaceful manner with deference to China's interest. I think Vietnam felt invincible after its victory over the mighty USA and the Soviets don't want China and Vietnam to be too friendly. Maybe you have more info on this.

This imply how important it is for a nation to cultivate a good leadership team. This is probably fate of Vietnam.

Actually I thought it should be mostly retired people like me who got time to spent on these forums. You are right though that I am not really familiar with using an online forum. Vietnam invaded Cambodia and wanted to conquer entire southeast Asia. China had to step in.

The point is not whether or not China shaken hands with USA. Regarding Vietnam's capability, staying neutral is the most rational choice, USSR, USA, China are all big powers, Vietnam should not take direct military adventure against any of these big powers after independence, esp China is at your doorstep. As long as China does not severely threaten Vietnam's security, e.g. proactively attack Vietnam, Vietnam should keep neutral. However, victory against France and USA made Vietnam's leadership team lost their judge, e.g. they thought USSR would attack China to protect Vietnam. If Vietnam did not screw up with China, Vietnam was currently at least as wealthy as Thailand in term of GDP per capita because Vietnam has a much better geographic environment than Thailand.

True, we tend to inscrease territory and strengthen defense to make harder for the Chinese to swallow our country, but Vietnam military campaign against Cambodia has another reason nothing with indochina conquest.

However Vietnam revealed their ambition and aggressiveness by invading China's ally Cambodia, they did take action. The result matters. They never want sincerely improve their relationship with China. This make Chinese leadership eventually understood the mindset of Vietnamese leadership, Vietnam COULD attack China when China is weak. It's a good thing for China to have such a dangerous neighbor to remind us in the long run.

It's time China should treat Vietnam as a real threat. We must take Vietnam in the near future down, as these Viets have been saying if they had the numbers they would be slapping Chinese every single day. Some number of our nuclear capabilities has to be pointing at Vietnam, must not hesitate to send dozens of nukes at Vietnam.

Indonesia launched a war(Konfrontasi) against tiny Singapore during 1963–66. We have moved on even though they never apologized. They even recently named their new warship, despite our protests, after war criminals who had massacred our soldiers. Similarly Vietnam and US are improving relations despite the war. Now waiting for Vietnam and China to be BFF, haha.
