A Muslim organisation here has asked the censor board not to clear the Prakash Jha-produced film 'Lipstick Under My Burkha'.

The film, directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, has already run into trouble as the Central Board of Film Certification has denied it clearance for being "lady-oriented" and containing "abusive words".

"Advisory panel of Madhya Pradesh unit of All India Muslim Tehwar Committee at its meeting here yesterday condemned the movie," the organisation's state unit chairman Ausaf Shahmeeri Khurram said.

He alleged that the film was "against the dignity of our women and tenets of Islam" and said the AIMTC had requested the CBFC not to clear it.

The film was shot in Bhopal.

'Lipstick Under My Burkha' has won the Spirit of Asia Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Oxfam Award for Best Film on Gender Equality at the Mumbai Film Festival. It features Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthaku.

All movies with religious undertone should be either complied with law or banning is necessary. We need moderation in film industry, otherwise it's not worth it. Moderation is very low on quality basis even more power, bar needs to be raised.

I wonder if Bollywood will come out in support of this movie

There is no religious undertone in the movie, its just a movie about few women. The trailer is on youtube.

I support no moderation of any kind on movies/speech but I guess free speech is too much to handle for progressive left.

Well few people from bollywood came out in support of the movie ones Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani used his scissors but I don't think we would hear many voices after the secular objection to the movie.

In this case the CBFC itself has gone mad......... they do not need anyone else's help. :P

CBFC has already refused clearance for "Lipstick Under My Burkha" with some absurd reasoning.

Might be but if abusive language and scene have been filmed in the movie, then indeed it falls under not A grade movies which are generally cleared without much thoughts. Will have to see the trailer before I can say anything in detail.

Free speech is part of our constitutional rights but there is responsibility also part of constitutional rights. We all need to be moderated enough to be acceptable to diverse society. Not like leftiest or extreme right people. These people create media strong enough to influence the masses then turning against each other's thorat, getting a life long source of devisive power politics.

Nope it's the rider on Free speech which is the source of divisive power politics. You might be happy with being shepherded into acceptance but I don't think we need to moderate free speech to please sensibilities of intolerant bigots on either side of the spectrum.

.
Is this accounts to intolerance? Or it applies only to Hindus??

That is not a very practical view.

Even in our family life we need to practice free speech with riders. You cannot even practice "free speech" with our own family, or we will be left with no family or family life. (every try 'free speech' with your wife ? :P )

Same respect and courtesy must be extended to or speech outside our family too.

"free speech" rationalisations are for barbarians who pretend to be "civilised" based on their wealth. For the truly civilised from ancient civilised society, every word needs to be weighted and measured before uttering it.

Let us not blindly ape the "west" and forget our own way of life.

lol I was talking about First amendment not self moderation while practicing free speech, two different issues.

True, in theory constitution needs to provide freedom, not restrict it.

But then again we do not have the necessary infrastructure in place to deal with the problems of "free speech".

Similar to the way laws are more favourable to women for rape, dowry, SC-ST etc. Pragmatism wins over ideology every time. ( think 'Jat reservation' :D )

Remember PK?
It did mock Hindus, but we took it in our stride. There should be some amount of liberty to criticise religions.
The slightest hint of humour or criticism of religions these days can earn you tons of trolls on twitter.
Are we so insecure about our religion?
Do they think a religion which has stood the test of time (be it Hinduism or Islam) can come crashing down because of a movie?

This movie was directed by a woman, with 3 lead ladies, therefore I'm sure that the movie would not be crass.
The audience award at Glasgow is a proof.

I heard they banned the movie.
They could have released it as say 15+ or 18+ movie.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for freedom of expression untill it really gets offensive against religious points. However my earlier statement is based on India's current situation and I have considered the least accommodative person point of view. It's like saying that weakest point should be considered the base for any chain of planning. Hope you get my point.
