Have been using ubuntu for more than an year now.....not expert though

Hate RedHat + SUSE; love Ubuntu currently using Ubuntu 9.06. I use it primarily to run application like Matlab; Maple & COMSOL; though I am learning blender till my semester results come. With the addition of browsers like Chrome [previously & even now I used OPERA as mainstay] results in Ubuntu achieve inparallel with Windows [not for gamers though]

Why?

Most cutting edge work happens in Fedora and that is what I use.

Remember I am a student. Also Ubuntu forum support is the MOST comprehensive ++ every goodies/updates are free such can't be said about Fedora

Fedora is free and always will be. Fedora Project
You can say that Fedora is the development version of Red Hat. Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases are based on the latest Fedora releases. For example, RHEL 6 is based on Fedora 12.

One small irritant you may face with Fedora which isn't available with Ubuntu is that Ubuntu will happily repackage proprietary drivers and codecs while Fedora refuses to do it. That can however be solved by using repos from rpmfusion which carries packages that Fedora refuses to do so.

There are several technical differences between Fedora and Ubuntu though. The primary ones are Fedora uses rpms and yum while Ubuntu is based on Debian and uses .deb packages and apt. They have also recently diverged on the desktop front with Fedora pushing for gnome-shell while Ubuntu plans on using Ubuntu Unity instead.

Haider, There are lots of resources available on the net which can help you with Oracle on Linux. I have to admit that I have never done it myself but I have been working on Linux for a long time now. If you need help understanding any specific bit about the OS send me a pm.

I did that for a while. Well I kinda' had to. Me and my friend were trying to put OSX on a Toshiba Satellite and needless to say... it didn't go well... So I had to use Fedora (running off a CD) for a while. I liked it so much that I downloaded Ubuntu and used that for ages...

Linux is great... but it goes as far as internet browsing, emails and light document work. Better stick with Windows/OSX for everything else.

I am using Debian for many years(10years) now. I haven't gone anywhere. sticking with Linux started with Debian Woody IIRC. Although I first used Redhat 7 for few months(as a n00b).

but, agree it is tough for anyone beyond internet,common applications. you won't get professional softwares for the likes of cad,graphics etc in Linux.

However, I thought current Linux distros like Ubuntu is much more friendly to new Users/Windows users. I am sure, hardware support is great compared to the olden days with 2.4kernel and stuffs. although support for wireless cards and many other gadgets are PITA.

OT: Wine- windows emulator has matured and it supports many win32 applications. You can install MS office among other things.

same pinch! I've completed RHCE in 2005(RHEL4). What is with that? I got a Redhat Bag,Pen,T-shirt and a Thick Book and RHEL CD's. They are resting somewhere in My shelves.
set back by Rs15,000 that time If I remember correctly.

I bet, a Linux Networking Course Offered by Reputed Institutions will be as good or better than RHCE.

BTW, I am interested in Linux Professional Institute's Certification. But, it's not about Networking. They've training in Banglore.

OT: I've known a guy Who failed RHCE Exam on RHEL6 3 weeks back. He spend Indian Rupees 13000 for this Exam. No second shot. So, He's Writing Again costing Rs20000(IIRC) with second shot option.
