Eastern Libya has declared autonomy from the rest of the country in a move that authorities in Tripoli had warned could destabilize the territorial integrity of the country.

Tuesdan in the main city of the Libyan east, Benghazi, leaders marked one year from the start of the uprising that ousted and eliminated long-term leader Muammar Gaddafi.

They also declared the petrol-rich eastern province to be semi-autonomous from the central government, asking for federalism.

Participants vowed to end what they saw as a decade-long marignalization of Eastern Libya within the country and appointed a council to manage the affairs of the region.

Ahmed Al-Zubair al-Senussi, long-time political prisoner during the Gaddafi regime and great-nephew to ex Libya king Idris, has been appointed to chair the council.

When built after the Second World War, Libya was formed by uniting the three provinces of Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan.

The anti-Gaddafi revolt in 2011 was ignited predominantly in Benghazi in the east, Cyrenaica's main city and Libya's second-largest.

Libya's National Transitional Council, which has governed the country after the ousting of Gaddafi, albeit for a time seated in Benghazi, has repeatedly warned against autonomization of regions, arguing it would lead to a splitting of the country.

The West has this awful obsession with balkanization. There's the obvious namesake example - the Balkans. Then there's Iraq, which is now de facto divided into Sunni, Shia and Kurd. Afganistan has become more sectarian with the Turkic North and the Pashtun South. Syria is heading in this direction if the Sunni rebels get their way. In the (likely) event that Israel drags the US into an Iranian war, they will probably carve out a state for the Kurds, Azeris, Arabs in the southwest, etc.

Of course, they're not very consistent: South Ossetia was 'bad' balkanization, a violation of Georgia's 'territorial sovereignty'. I laughed so hard when I heard it, because China used to have a lexical monopoly on that phrase.

Probably the plan of the neo-colonial so called "west" all along.

So the country hasnt fallen apart already? :shout: So much for liberating LIBYA from a dictator.

What is now Libya, was originally 3 separate administrative zones created by the Italians: Cyrenaica Tripoliania and Fezzan. Each ruled by its own Italian "Governor" often competing against eachother. And oppressing, killing Libyans for minor offenses. Seizing their farmlands etc.

And later installing a King b putting the 3 administrative zones together.

Sadly Libyans have forgotten the Struggle of Freedom by their Grandfathers, and are now taking orders by 21st Century Colonists.

anglo-americans are professionally profiteering from political instability around the globe, and if there is no trouble to profit from, they will induce such instability to make money. russia and china have both wisen up to anglo-saxons' political games at the expense of other peoples' blood and lives and have acted gallantly in stopping these games at the UNSC lately in performing their noble duty in protecting smaller nations from the predatory "humanitarian" intervention

This is exactly what the US freedom is in the end. Any wise man knows that unless a country has started mass murder on genocide level, it's best to let them take care of their own business and resolve their own internal disputes. But no, the US insists that she will provide "freedom" for them.

Instead of the reunification of Arab states, which share the same ideology, faith, history, language and culture, and had been divided thanks to British, French and Italian colonialists, they're dividing themselves up more and more.

Massive fail and disappointment from the Arabs themselves actually, who I say are the main culprits for their own demise. How could they even have thought of letting foreigners solve their own problems, and foreigners form across the Mediterranean and Atlantic no less.

Very true. West is obsessed with balkanisation.
They partitioned India into India and pakistan and princely states, permanently weakened India, and created two nation states INdia and Pakistan as perpetual enemies wasting precious resources and men fighting with each other.

Now Libya will be partitioned and the new entities will keep fighting with each other on petty issues while west will jackoff all the oil at lower prices.

.
Libya deserved this let them continue killing each other, and when another civil war erupts between the militias the gaddafi days will look like the golden days.

if brits wanted balkanisation of sub continent they would have divided it into all the princley states not just india and pakistan, esp creating some islamic state would have been in their agenda from day one

the mostly balkanised africa and middle east

kashmirissue is the thing which irritates indo pak, if only india had obliged issue of referendum, both have been peaceful
