ISLAMABAD – The federal cabinet has decided to grant the Regular Public Transport License (RPTL) to the newly introduced Liberty Air Limited.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhary told journalists on Thursday that the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan decided to approve the issuance of a charter license to Liberty Air.

Liberty, which is owned by Mian Amir Mahmood and Ch Munir, is the first among five airlines that had applied for a license to operate in Pakistan this year.

Besides Liberty Air, four other airlines including Askari Air, Air Siyal, Go Green and Afeef Zara Airways had applied for the license, which allows the airline to cover domestic routes only.

However, there is no official word on the routes to be covered by the new airline.

Earlier in October, the federal government had granted permission to SaudiGulf Airlines to start operations on a Saudi-Pakistan route.

The current rate of growth in Pakistan’s aviation industry is expected to be around 9% per annum which could continue till 2020, according to a forecast of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) – a trade body of world’s airlines.
