Not the rest of Afghanistan.Khalid Hosseini notes this in the Kite Runner as well when the protagonist returns to Afghanistan after many years in the US to find poverty, illiteracy and burkas everywhere. When he points this out to his driver he scoffs at him and says something along the lines of "what did you rich people living in Kabul know about how ordinary Afghans lived in the rest of the country".

They still had no chance.

And today they are still worse off than what they were at that time. Afghanistan has a problem of collective thinking and very short tempers. That sense of unity is missing and which is why everyone just takes them for a ride, inserting groups of radicals and terrorists sponsored by some superpower or the other.

Had they been open to non-tribal mindset, no one would be able to weaken them the way they are weak today.

Spare me the 'poor people got together to start revolution' crap. Afghanistan was a socialist country and USSR had done marvellous work to get them back on their track.

There are rich and poor in all countries.

Their misery is because of Taliban: a collective meddling by CIA and you lot.

Yes you had to bear the brunt of refugees, but that was because your then friend backed off and left you in a lurch.

Umm...
Once upon a time Afghanistan was ruled by a communist govt which had Soviet's backing. The internal conflict between anti-communist Muslim guerrillas and Communist govt is what led to Soviet's intervention in '79.
And then the Mujahideens happened!!
The Soviet's used various tactics to eliminate Mujahideens rural support, mainly bombing and by depopulating rural areas. Mujahideens then took asylum in a "neighbouring" country. Soon they returned back to Afghanistan with better arms and better training, provided by U.S. and a "neighbouring country". Mujahideens were then able to neutralise Soviet air power by shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles ( gifted to 'em by U.S. of A).
Come '88 and Soviet decided to leave Afghanistan after signing an agreement.

These pics only tell half of the story. My father went to Kabul in his early teens. Kabul was definitely what is portrayed in the pics. The rest of Afghanistan was a different story.

You think that only the Taliban caused this? Think again buddy. Stop washing your hands. India too is involved in destabilizing and radicalising Afghanistan by helping militant groups such as the Northern Alliance.

“The Northern Alliance are just as misogynistic and brutal as the Taliban, but they deceive the international community to think otherwise by wearing suits and speaking Western languages,” said the representative, Tameenah, who is unable to be photographed or use her last name due to security concerns.

“The Northern Alliance has been committing war crimes since 1996,” she said. “Women are even more afraid of the Northern Alliance than the Taliban.”

Why should we invade and conquer Afghan territory ? May be you should read and learn from history how we lost half of our country in 1971. Many Yahya Khan are born in Pakistan these days !

You can only imagine what kind of neighborhood and environment they created in Pakistan. They are toxic and not ready to join mainstream civilization. Afghan refugees caused the greatest corruption of Pakistani society.

Can you tell me what did Pakistan's support for Taliban created in Afghanistan ? Million people dead, infrastructure destroyed and generation of people are refugees and living in poverty. When you point one finger at Afghans your three other fingers are pointing to yourself !

I would not take the bait to troll. I always call spade a spade. The 'tent' is inhumane. I am sure all people will agree with me except may be people with extreme ideologies or people who think women are objects.

I dont think thats male insecurity but more with the choice of these women. I mean they could wear burka/hijab and they dont look so brutal.

'70s Afganistan was more like '40s Soviet Union than Europe.
A bunch of photos of the tiny one percent which was lucky enough to experience the good life doesn't mean that the country had become "European".

The delusions of an Indian whose own government had supported a gang of warlords and drug smugglers who together divided the country along ethnic lines and massacred anyone who did not support them. 'Course that doesn't matter because they weren't Islamist. Oh wait! They were! They were former Mujahideen who had risen against the state to implement Islamic law. But wait! That doesn't matter either, they were our friends and fought against our rivals.
Indians on this forum are a paradox. They can be so emotional and noble when talking about Pakistan, but when it comes to the actions of their own government, it's all "geo-politics". You know, interests and all. There are no such things as morals when it comes to geo-politics, right? Right?
