Yes they are developed for high crash resistance and swift take of and landing. I do not like them either. lol

In CQB's the Gatling gun takes a few moments to actually start going(reach the optimal Firing rate) so that really hurts the soldiers on the ground as they would be taking intense enemy gunfire!

Retracting landing gears are not required in Helicopters and certain Turboprop aircraft as adding them would add a lot more weight to the fuselage.This would eat up the payload and not much drag reduction occurs as these(Helicopters) do not fly very fast.This(additional weight) is also the reason why hi-performance turbo prop aircraft do not have them but instead have aerodynamically designed covers(streamlined half bodies) for the tyres.
And yes,the Landing Gears are crash resistant ala the Dhruv

I think the M621 cannon is pretty awesome.

The M621 locking system makes use of two swinging locking pieces, one in each side of the bolt, projecting outwards into the bolt way and engaging in recesses in the body. After the round is fired, these locking pieces are retracted by gas action.
