Pinning hope on India's indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft, the Indian Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, on Thursday was optimistic that the jet, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) would would meet requirements of the force.

"Obviously, the Tejas is a very good bet because we need to go indigenous. It may not be best in the world but obviously it will meet some of our requirements," Raha told journalists after reviewing the security scenario in the northeast with commanders from the Eastern Air Command here.

"We want them in large quantities and larger numbers so plan are afoot to improve its quality is likely more and produce them in larger numbers some more to fill the void that the IAF has more or likely to have it in the future as the legacy fleets get decommissioned and therefore, Tejas will be one of our mainstay," he said.

"Towards that I think Make in India or indigenous production is what the government of the country is taking of so there will be a lot of fast tracking in this directions to have Make in India projects to replace these aircraft will make sense," he said.

On the Rafale deal, Raha said all plans are in place and a lot of activity is on for new acquisitions to replace the ageing fleet of the Indian Air Force.

"Everybody knows about that there are issues with the legacies of some of the fleet and they need to be replaced. Obviously they cannot carry on for too long. So, all the plans are in place...for new acquisitions to replace the older aircraft," he said.

Stating that there were various reasons the deal for 126 MMCRA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) could not fructify, Raha said the government had taken the decision to acquire 36 Rafale jets in flyaway condition after commitments were made at the highest level in France and India.

"I am very hopeful that it will be through much faster than the normal process," he said.

Noting that the Eastern Air Command is a priority area, Raha admitted that in the past few decades, the Indian Air Force had been concentrating more on the western theatre.

"A lot of infrastructure and assets has come up in those areas and we are quite well off in terms of our capability. But the eastern part of the country did not get as much attention it deserved. Therefore, we had some gaps in our capability but all of you know there is a lot of work (to be done) in this regard to bring up our capability," he said.

It's quite obvious IAF love rafale and not so with tejas..

Why can't they see at the price of tejas, they can raise the squadron numbers..

what about the capability ?? that's what more important

and tejas can never be replacement for mmrca

Then why was gripen considered for mmrca ?

There's is no consideration from our part.. we send out a RFP and they replied. If Grippen was the best then IAF would've opted for it. She's not so it's out of competition

It is obvious. A single engine plane costing 1/4th of MMRCA can not have the matching capabilty so take your obsession some where else.

That's what i'm saying... and it can't be a replacment for mmrca

thing is 36 rafales will come no matter what the all hokus phokus going on are pressure tactics by MOD to squeze best possible deal for 90 made in india ones which even french know are not "just 90":coffee:

as for tejas MK1, 1P or MK2 they are all for filling up numbers for mig21 & 27s and possiballi for jags in future

Mate I believe the operational requirements have changed following the scrapping of the mmrca deal. The 36 Rafales I suspect are heading straight to the SAC. The Tejas on the other hand were meant for point defence and A2G roles much alike our short legged mig 21s. That remains the same.

SAC will rely on SU 30 MKI ; And Mirage 2000 Plus the missiles

It is a difficult thing to do all the wiring and integration

Rafale will be used for taking out the enemy AWACS

Taking out the AWACS is the most important task in a war

The Spectra Plus Meteor Combination is a deadly thing

Dude, I believe Operational requirements of IAF is still the same with 36 Rafael and looking to add another 90 under new bid, and if we really buy 36 rafael the new bid for 90 will be same. what is SAC??? (sorry i dodn't know)

And Tejas was always developed with point defense in mind. they'll only act as interceptors backed by other fighters. for that its good enough, I guess is IAF is blabering on Tejas is because of the delay in MMRCA, if the deal is signed and once the Rafael starts to arrive all this jooberjaber will go away and without a complaint IAF will induct them

Every body know that. How ever later versions of LCA (It will no more be LCA then) shall be in the league of MMRCA like Gripen NG.

This is a very positive ststement. HAL says that they can reduce the weight by 800 KG. With vastly improved T/W ratio and aerodynamic improvement, Tejas can be a very potent fighter with a lots of goodies such as AESA, EW suite, low RCS, Low weight and high agility with very high AOA and Desi BVR like astra.

Sorry totally disagree with you.

Why?

You know whether Saab has offered NG for MMRCA?

For starters...the Fighter was made for defense, it's going to be a interceptor not going to godeep in enemy air space to attack targets. Tejas is too small to be in a M catagory, Less Range,Less weapon load, less speed, the problem with the radar, lets see if HAL can manage to increase the range( i'm hearing improvements on tejas for past 3 years with no results) have to sacrifies weapon load if carrying Pods.. and the list goes on.

DO you know anything about naval tejas? it is 1.5 meter longer than current Tejas and shall have a 118 KN engine. Newer version of jejas shall be significantly bigger and have much more powerful engine. They shall be in F 16 and gripen NG class.
