LBA takes out rally for UT status to Ladakh, freedom from Kashmir rule

LEH, Apr 8: Demanding Union Territory status with Legislative power to Ladakh region, Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) held a massive protest rally, here today.
The rally commenced from Chowkhang Vihara and after passing through main bazaar, culminated at Polo Ground. Thousands of people, including Numberdars, village representatives, Monks from different Monasteries, employees of different Government departments, various women groups and people from villages of all the five regions of Ladakh, took part in the rally.

They raised slogans in support of their demand and expressed resentment over the repeated discrimination meted out to the people by successive Kashmir centric Governments. Holding banners and placards, thousands of people peacefully marched towards the Polo Ground where several speakers addressed the gathering.
President LBA Tsewang Thinles, vice president P T Kunzang, LBA Youth vice president Konchok Stak, LBA women wing general secretary, addressed the gathering and alleged discrimination by successive Kashmir centric Governments for the last so many decades.
They also highlighted some other issue and demands, including reservation in promotion, regularization of contractual employees of PDD, Police, PWD and other departments, regularization of Airfare, LPG subsidy, tourism etc.

The LBA members later submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Prime Minister of India demanding granting of Union Territory status with legislature and action by the State Government on other highlighted issues.
LBA president Tsewang Thinles, in his speech, said that UT demand was not new but being raised by Ladakhis since 1947. Recalling that all religious leaders had unanimously demand UT during Home Ministry Rajnath Singh’s visit to Leh last year, he said that Hill Council granted to Ladakh was actually a handicap without any autonomy. He also appealed the Central Government to take Ladakhis into confidence while deciding anything about Kashmir issue.
Thinles cautioned that few vested interests were trying to harm the communal harmony thereby trying to create rift between different communities. He also demands subsidy to Buddhist pilgrimage during religious tour at par with Haj pilgrimage to Muslims community.
Vice president PT Kunzang said that LBA was not against any non-local doing various businesses there. “However, Kashmiris coming to Ladakh in large number when situation in the Valley gets worsen, must be checked timely,” he added.

Demanding Union Territory status with legislative power to Ladakh region, a massive protest rally was held by Ladakh Buddhist Association this Saturday.
Starting from Chowkhang Vihara, the rally traversed from main bazaar and terminated at Polo Ground. The rally comprised thousands of people, including village representatives, government employees, women’s groups, Monks, Numberdars and locals from all five regions of Ladakh.

Demonstrating their displeasure over the repetitive discrimination for people of Ladakh by Kashmir Government over the period, people raised slogans, held placards and banners, while the huge crowd peacefully proceeded to the Polo Ground.
Several speakers, including president of LBA Tsewang Thinles, vice President P T Kunzang, LBA women’s wing general secretary and LBA Youth vice president Konchok Stak were present at Polo Ground to address the gathering.

Some other demands and issues that were emphasized were reservation in promotion and regularization of contractual employees of PDD, PWD, Police and other government departments. Regularization of Airfare, tourism, LPG subsidy and suffering of Ladakh people due to favoritism in distribution of state land, appointment of Patwaris based on religious communities, developmental initiatives due to constant disturbance by cause of militancy in Kashmir, etc. were some other concerns pointed out. Another prominent appeal was that of subsidy to Buddhist pilgrimage during religious tour equivalent to that given to Muslims for Haj pilgrimage.

In his speech, LBA President Tsewang Thinles said that the demand for UT from Ladakhis was not a new one. It is being raised since the time of independence and was also conveyed during Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Leh last year. He also expressed that the present Hill Council status of Ladakh was a handicap since there is no autonomy.
Thinles urged that the Central Government should take Ladakhis into confidence while making decisions on the Kashmir issue. He also called the government’s attention to some groups with vested interests who have been trying to hamper communal harmony in the region.

Vice president P T Kunzang asserted that the LBA does not oppose any non-local doing business in Ladakh, however, arrival of Kashmiris in large numbers when the situation in the valley is not suitable needs to be checked

its rational, Kashmir is 64% Muslim, most of the Muslims are at the west, south are hindu majority and the east is predominantly Buddhist

according to the UN resolution india will only agree to that if and only if Pakistan withdraws form p o k , obviously the minority regions will side with india, why would hindus and Buddhists give up religious rights for shiria rule, especially after all the ethnic wipeing that's been done

yup its fair they need to govern themselves, no point in stuck with radicals who will ruin them. We can look to give autonomy within the state so as not to jeopardize our stance.

that's the best option , but even with its stratigical advantage GOI doesn't want this since loosing these territories means pro India parties will size with the extremists for political gain, since no minority will now vote for a Muslim party after the pundit genocide
