BAHAWALPUR, April 24: Situation turned ugly here on Tuesday when angry lawyers attacked the courtroom of a civil judge, broke windowpanes and raised slogans against him for hearing cases despite their strike.

Reports said scores of members of district bar association gathered in front of the courtroom of Civil Judge Chaudhry Saeed Ahmed Akhtar. As the lawyers attempted to enter the courtroom, the official staff closed the doors of the courtroom. At this, the furious lawyers allegedly broke the windowpanes, and removed judge’s nameplate and raised slogans against him.

According to eyewitnesses, the judge, in a bid to protect himself, left the courtroom using the door of his retiring room. No complaint has been lodged with the police by the civil judge so far.

The striking lawyers alleged the judge began hearing of cases as they were demonstrating to express solidarity with the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the members of high court and district bar association observed complete strike on Monday to express solidarity with the suspended CJP.

The district bar members also brought out a protest rally from bar room and marched up to Farid Gate where their leaders addressed them. On their way back, the lawyers staged a sit-in at the GPO Chowk.

The bar associations also adopted resolutions condemning Pemra notice against Aaj TV.

There is a "NORM" in judiciary around the world that when Bar Associations announce a strike the hearing of the cases would be postponed by Judges as there is a danger that some cases would be dismissed due to non appearance of lawyers or parties.

Such incidents are very rare when a Judge dont respect the Bar and vice versa.

Where did you hear that judges automatically follow Bar association. I rang up a friend who is Barrister in London, and apparantly if you want a case postponed you must submit a petition, at least a day earlier.

The whole incidence reflects the degenerate state and lawlessness of Pakistan Society. Lawyers are also part of Pakistan population. If lawyers themselves dont respect the law: as they proved in Lahore by manhandling the Govt Lawyer (I saw it happening on Geo TV) and now by beating up the judge, how can you expect ordinary mortals to do so??

Do we blame this also on "Conspiracy" against Pakistan and Muslims??. Lets us face it. No one gives a damn about law in Pakistan if it effects others. They only shout about it if it effects them. Sad state of affairs but true !!

You rang up a friend and you are right now!

I have been a part of legal system for 15 years and obviously understand batter then a phone call answer.

To make you more clear if an individual lawyer wants an adjournment he would request a day before, but when the decision comes from the Bar Associations (these are constitutional institution), the NORM is that judiciary would respect the decision of Bar.
