I would like to know the various methods by which a submarine can launch a cruise missile.I am aware that some submarines have vertical launch tubes. But after observing the pics of the INS CHAKRA one will realize that the submarine is not very big to have vertical launchers.

Can a submarine launch a missile from the torpedo tubes?

Does anyone know the launch mechanism of the Arihant?

Friend - INS Chakra is a 12000 ton nuclear submarine. Its one hell of a monster.

Arihant and INS Chakra are two different submarines.

I know that. What i want to know is that how do smaller submarines that carry missiles launch them.I have posted a pic and one can clearly see that vertical launchers need a lot of space.

I once watched a program on NatGeo where they showed that when cruise missiles were launched from a sub they had a special motor at the back which was meant to propel them out of the water and once out of water the missiles droped that motor . What i concluded was these were atleast until they came out of water were special cruise missiles.

I am curious too. The Arihant is small compared to other nuke subs. Does it at all have missile launching capability?

The difference is in the no of missiles it can carry
While Arihant can carry 12 Balistic/cruise missiles , Akula II can carry 28
