The IDF is planting trees near Gaza to block the line of vision of terrorists firing advanced anti-tank missiles, but it will take several years before the trees years grow high enough to help defend Israelis.

“Project Forest Security” began earlier this year after the IDF learned that terrorists in the de facto Hamas government have obtained Russian-made Kornet anti-tank missiles. One of them hit a school bus two weeks ago and killed 16-yerar-old Daniel Viflic.

“The recent use of anti-tank fire was unusual,” according to Commander of Territorial Defense in the Gaza Division, Lt. Col. Ilan Dayan. It’s something we considered a threat; however, the attack on the school bus crossed every line.”

The purpose of "Forest Security," costing seven million shekels ($1.6 million) began, is to create an obstacle to the aiming of missiles and mortars at civilian targets.

"We are planting trees that will grow and provide cover," said Lt. Col. Dayan. "A person firing an anti-tank missile needs a line of sight to the target. If he doesn’t have one, he has a serious problem."

It will take years for the trees grow tall enough to obscure the line of sight from Gaza into nearby Israeli communities. In the meantime, the IDF has installed a radar system that warns residents of incoming mortar shells, similar to the 15-second early warning system for Kassam rockets. .

"The level of protection has slowly increased, and the whole area is built well for emergency situations," said the territorial defense officer. "The day when 51 mortar shells were launched (less than a month ago), the system was used, with high quality," explained Lt. Col. Dayan.

The IDF added that the mortar shell and rocket attacks have not altered day-to-day life in southern communities, but agriculture and tourism have been adversely affected.

nice idea, but isn't it hot there when it is summer. i mean what if it burns just like in haifa?

. . .
why they dont install fake trees? i meant made of steel/wood. then they dont have to wait for years.

Doesn't that mean Israelis are gonna terrorize the Muslims and not stop killing, which would result in fury and rage against the Israelis. To avoid the fury they are having this perogram. Tch tch. Who is the real terrorist now? Someone who kills the men for defending family and fighting the terrorists to save his daughter and wife being raped or the one in comu and doing this stuff?

I guess the second one.

Even the trees are going to say... O Abdullah... an Israeli is hiding behind me... Come and kill him

Lol.:rofl: Just like angles on JF-17's wings? Thats really stretching it a bit too far!!
You see, people like you who distort holy scriptures to suit their personal agenda are the reason why Muslims face what they face today.

. .
How sad on one hand they plant trees to protect their tanks and on the other they cut down the olive trees and deprive the arabs of their livelihood.

Gubbi stick to the topic no time to troll... no need to bring jf-17 in it..

Thats really weird IMO. as IND151 suggested they could plant fake trees, that would not only disturb the vision but also would be fire safe. and no need to wait for years to grow.

Its not forest, if fire will start will be very easy to put it down.

Trees look nicer. :azn: Buses currently use different route and tanks got anti missile protection.

Decision to plant trees was made after Hamas fired missile at school bus.

More over since its establishment Israel planted tens of millions of trees. If in 1948 there were 5 million trees in Israel, today there are over 200 mln.

and on the other they cut down the olive trees and deprive the arabs of their livelihood.
No one cuts anything to deprive livehood.

It would be far cheaper to keep ones promise and solve the Palestinian problem amicably and justly. All the trees in the world will not stop people holding a grudge. Better solve the problem rather than complicating it.

We got missile and rocket problem after we pulled out from Gaza. When IDF occupied it we did not have any missiles.

Good idea but make a wall that would be more safe than trees and wont take years to or plant pams they grow at a faster rate
