N otwithstanding stiff opposition from political parties in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka [ Images ] on Wednesday asserted that it was 'very firm' on continuing the training programme of its defence personnel in India [ Images ] and ruled out sending them to countries such as China.
Sri Lanka's powerful Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, also the brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa [ Images ], said his country looks at India in a 'much bigger way' than China.
During an interaction with visiting Indian journalists, Rajapaksa admitted that the recent attacks against Sri Lankan citizens in Tamil Nadu has 'hurt' their feelings, but said no one in his country had any 'hard feelings' for India or its people.
"No. We have never (thought about it) because in our long history since the days when we moved from British shoulders all training (to army personnel) were done in India or in Pakistan," he said.
The minister was responding to a question whether Sri Lanka was reconsidering the training programme for its military personnelin India and possibly get them trained in countries such as China in the wake of protests in Tamil Nadu.
Dwelling on the issue, he said it has been the practice for any new batch to be sent to Indiafor training and that Sri Lanka has no plans tochange the tradition.
"There can be various opinions, but we can't (shift the programme). We are very firm on that and we have confidence (that it will continue). We have not even thought about," he said when pressed further on whether Sri Lanka would stop sending its personnel to India. He noted that starting from the defence secretary to army commanders, everyone has been trained in India. "Everyone go to India first and only then they are sent to other countries such as the United States (for training)," he said.Lanka to continue to train its defence personnel in India - Rediff.com India News

Training in China? :haha: Firstly there's this language problem. Then China's doctrines, organisations and battle concepts are totally different. Thirdly, the PLA works under the Communist party's diktats and have political commissars amalgamated in units as part of their propaganda and brainwashing machinery.

So what are the SLA going to learn from the 'training' imparted by the Han Dynasty? Nix!

Except of course, to learn the 'Goose march'!!

How can you even make such a statement, when your own country trains and supplies terrorists worldwide and fight them in your own country too. Your statement fits better for your own pure land

Since you have short term memory , let me give you an example ..remember Ilyas Kashmiri...know who he was..a Pakistani SSG soldier, later transferred to Soviet-Afghan sector and then to Kashmir sector..served in Jaish-e-Mohammed, Huji and finally being promoted to Al-Qaeda.

After which he tried to assassinate Musharraf(for his U-turn on Kashmir)..turned against Pakistan after Lal Masjid seige.,,,started his 313 brigade...involved in assassination of Benazir Bhutto and Karachi base attack.

Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie arrived in Colombo on Wednesday on a five-day visit aimed at solidifying military ties that have grown increasingly close following the end of the war in Sri Lanka.

China will pledge US$ 100 million to help take forward Sri Lankan Army projects in the war-ravaged north and northeast.

During his five-day visit, General Liang and his 25-member delegation are scheduled to visit a number of military facilities.

He is expected to give a lecture at the Defence Services Command and Staff College at Sapugaskanda, as well as visit an Army Cantonment in Panagoda and the Defence Services College in Colombo,
for which China has provided financial assistance.

He will also meet with President Mahinda Rajapaksa. On arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Wednesday morning, General Liang was greeted by the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral DWAS Dissanayake and Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal HD Abeywickrama, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

In June, Sri Lanka and China pledged to deepen defence ties when Lieutenant General Jayasuriya visited Beijing. China’s substantial military assistance to the Sri Lankan government during the closing stages of the war in 2009 has been seen by Sri Lankan officials as crucial to their victory over the LTTE – a point stressed by every visiting Sri Lankan official to Beijing in recent months. General Liang said then that China was “willing to make joint efforts with Sri Lanka to boost bilateral relations".

China has also reiterated its support to Sri Lanka against persistent international pressure over its reconciliation process, with Chinese officials stressing that it was their view that Sri Lanka should address its internal issues without international interference. China has assured Sri Lanka, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, of its continued support against any international pressure.
