Looking through a few threads about the lack of development in Pakistan and obstacles to progress.

I see 'landowners' put forward as a major problem.

I get the basics of this argument, but could someone more knowledgeable on this matter tell me a few things.

Who are the landowners?

How did they get the land they own, by legal means or strong arming people?

How are they stopping progress? Are they?

Have any land reforms been suggested? How could land reforms work with regards to landowners.

Thanks brother mens:smitten:

I think the Zamindari system which is still prevailing in pakistan is a major cause of concern for them. By abolishing this medevial practice pakistan can do wonders for its farmers and poor lot.

Lets see what wiki says about the zamindari system in pakistan:

In Pakistan the zamindari System is still present in some form, especially in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab. Zamindars are known by different terms in different provinces. In Sindh, for example, zamindars are known as Wadera, while in Punjab, different terms such as 'Chauhdari', Pakhral,'Sardar', 'Pir' & 'Malik' are used.

The title of 'Lambardar' is only available to a powerful family of zimindar this is a state-privileged status which is generally hereditary and equivalent to an English Duke, there can only be one Lambardar of the village/city, who in many cases has wide ranging governmental powers, i.e. the policing authority of the village, and many other governmental and administrative perks, this has resulted in a feudal system perpetrating the Pakistan Senate and its elected representatives. Almost all elected leaders of the State have been from the landed and feudal gentry in many cases holding the tile of Lambardar. Most Presidents and prime ministers also have been from feudal stock, with the exception of Martial law administrators and Generals who led coups to power.

Since pakistani senate is full of these bloodsucking landlords and they are the decision makers, that is why this system is still prevailing in pakistan. They are not willing to give up their powers. So, pakistan need some sort of a revolution to abolist this medevial practice ant prevent the harrasment of poor lot.

Cases of illegal occupation of land in Pakistan are a lot. Most of these people who illegally occupy this land are politicians, relatives of politicians, friends of politicians, people with a strong hold in the area, smugglers, land mafia and many more.

Yes, some of this land they occupied is owned by the commercial, industrial, sidelined government organizations and agencies. The lack of space means lack of infrastructure and less development space.

I dont think these landowners or illegal occupiers are the real obstacle in the development process as we have alot of land at our disposal but we are just too lazy to move a finger and divert the bucks from our Swiss bank accounts to these development projects.

Parties that protest and oppose jagirdars are called fascists and terrorists.
