Thursday, December 17, 2015 - Islamabad—The recent efforts to enhance connectivity by launching TAPI, CASA-1000 and other mega projects including construction of roads from Central Asian Republics to Afghanistan and Pakistan have rekindled hopes for land-locked Kazakhstan to establish strong links in the South. Kazakhstan with overflowing energy resources desires to connect itself with Gwadar for seeking openings in Arabian and Indian seas, Gulf and African countries. Pakistan is anxiously looking to such welcoming endevours as Islamabad and Astana have always enjoyed very close relations.

The hurdle is only lack of infrastructure. Bakhytbek Shabarbayev, Ambassador of Kazakhstan is one of the longest serving envoy in Islamabad with strong links in the corridor of power as well with members of civil society and trading community. A quiet person but have strong insight, the Ambassador is a popular figure. He threw a grand reception on Tuesday evening in a local hotel to celebrate 24th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan inviting politicians, parliamentarians, Ambassadors, retired civil servants, businessmen, members of civil society, professionals and media persons. In a beautiful setting, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Minister for Defense Production was the Chief Guest.

On his arrival, the activities picked up in the festivity where presence of over 500 guests demonstrated the popularity of the Ambassador and his country in Pakistan. The Ambassador and his team warmly welcomed every guest. After a briefceremony of playing of national anthems and cake cutting amidst long applause by the guests, the hall was abuzz with informal talks and interactions among the participants discussing national and international issues. The two screens on both corners were beaming out music and documentaries of this one of the richest states in Asia.

The guests were treated with tasteful dishes. Literature on Kazakhstan was also avaiable. Kazakhstan is one of the largest countries area-wise in the world and its resources including mineral wealth are in abundance. Per capita income is very high with great potential to further increase standard of living of the people. Both the countries have regular exchange of high level visits. President Nursultan Nazarbayev has visited Pakistan several times and in reciprocity, Pakistani leaders also visited Astana frequently which helped to ink a lot of agreements and MoUs in different fields.

Trade volume is not high at the moment but if road-connectivity is established, the trade can touch new heights. In August this year, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited Kazakhstan. Both the countries expressed resolve to increase volume of trade.

We should literally jump on this opportunity. Kazakhistan is the furthest north and is connected with xinjiang which is where cpec is headed which means connectivity with two nations ( and more if we spread cpec along the central Asian nations like Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan) .

It would be a massive boost to link cpec with central Asian countries especially Kazakhstan which is one of the most resource rich nations on the world. Gawader port is a sound option for them and it would increase our connectivity and trade with kazakhistan exponentially.

The infrastructure is being built under cpec and with chinas help we should be able to link cpec to central Asia and Kazakhstan. We need to keep Kazakhstan interested and increase agreements and bilateral relations...

I thought it was already decided to connect CPEC with central Asian states, no surprise though .

Farhan sb,

Wudnt they be better advised to go thru ChahBahar instead?

Regards
Oh you better now tell this to stupid officials of Kazakhstan who're trying to crash the country with their stupid decisions.

PF,

Never mind ModiGee. Take a look at the map. What makes more sense- travelling thru peaceful terrain of Iran? Or the badlands of A'stan and B'stan?

Regards
ok supa pawa, i dont why the stupid chinese and central asian countires are talking about this with Pakistan they should first consult with india who have vedic knowledge

Gwadar is the land of opportunity. Every country should be invited to CPEC for atleast 1 billion $ token money.
Pakistan can offer its land routes to the land locked countries on reasonable taxation and duty.

Government should install industry in the country. It is the best, easiest and quickest way to create millions of jobs every year. We can make a trillion $+ budget by just investing some entrepreneurship in planning the future of Pakistan. If our armed forces, textile industry and sports goods industries can compete with other countries then we can compete in every field alhamdulilah. Our govt should pat heed to some sincere planning instead of just funds consuming mega projects. Industrialization of Pakistan on medium scale alongwith the improvement in agricultural setup can give us a balanced economy.

They are already connected to Xinjiang, CPEC will be connecting Gawadar to Xinjiang so they won't be passing through Turkmen or Afghan territories.

Fact are facts. The roads are being built quite quickly. The rail links and pipelines, not so much.

In the next meeting they will select the railway route from Kashgar to Gwadar. It important to build something correctly, rather than rushing the project.

A rail line across the Khunjerab Pass would be a engineering marvel indeed.
