Thursday, December 17, 2015 - Islamabad—The recent efforts to enhance connectivity by launching TAPI, CASA-1000 and other mega projects including construction of roads from Central Asian Republics to Afghanistan and Pakistan have rekindled hopes for land-locked Kazakhstan to establish strong links in the South. Kazakhstan with overflowing energy resources desires to connect itself with Gwadar for seeking openings in Arabian and Indian seas, Gulf and African countries. Pakistan is anxiously looking to such welcoming endevours as Islamabad and Astana have always enjoyed very close relations.
The hurdle is only lack of infrastructure. Bakhytbek Shabarbayev, Ambassador of Kazakhstan is one of the longest serving envoy in Islamabad with strong links in the corridor of power as well with members of civil society and trading community. A quiet person but have strong insight, the Ambassador is a popular figure. He threw a grand reception on Tuesday evening in a local hotel to celebrate 24th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan inviting politicians, parliamentarians, Ambassadors, retired civil servants, businessmen, members of civil society, professionals and media persons. In a beautiful setting, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Minister for Defense Production was the Chief Guest.
On his arrival, the activities picked up in the festivity where presence of over 500 guests demonstrated the popularity of the Ambassador and his country in Pakistan. The Ambassador and his team warmly welcomed every guest. After a briefceremony of playing of national anthems and cake cutting amidst long applause by the guests, the hall was abuzz with informal talks and interactions among the participants discussing national and international issues. The two screens on both corners were beaming out music and documentaries of this one of the richest states in Asia.
The guests were treated with tasteful dishes. Literature on Kazakhstan was also avaiable. Kazakhstan is one of the largest countries area-wise in the world and its resources including mineral wealth are in abundance. Per capita income is very high with great potential to further increase standard of living of the people. Both the countries have regular exchange of high level visits. President Nursultan Nazarbayev has visited Pakistan several times and in reciprocity, Pakistani leaders also visited Astana frequently which helped to ink a lot of agreements and MoUs in different fields.
Trade volume is not high at the moment but if road-connectivity is established, the trade can touch new heights. In August this year, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited Kazakhstan. Both the countries expressed resolve to increase volume of trade.
