LALGARH/BINPUR (WEST MIDNAPORE): Human barricades greeted armed columns of West Bengal policemen as they tried to march into Pirakata and cut open a Central Force jawans flag march at Piraghata Chawk outpost for the final operation against Maoists at Lalgarh in West Midnapore. (PTI Photo)
channel on Thursday in the first phase of operations to reclaim parts of West Midnapore district that Naxalites have captured. It was the first response of the CPM-led state administration after weeks of dithering that saw the Naxals evict state cops, burn police stations and CPM offices and kill local party leaders. ( Watch )

The Maoist-led People's Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCPA) had planned a massive resistance but the state police appear to have broken through the first tier of defence as agitators gave in.

State policemen, backed by central paramilitary forces, marched ahead using lathis, teargas and rubber bullets, 12km from Pirakata to the Jhitka forests, about 5km from Lalgarh — an area out of bounds for the administration since Maoists took control last November. Another contingent entered from Bankura and reached Ramnangar, close to Lalgarh. The police, however, suspect the crumbling of human shields could be a ploy by PCPA to lure the forces deep inside the Naxal stronghold for an ambush.

Maoist strategist Koteshwar Rao and PCPA leader Chhatradhar Mahato were briefing reporters at Boro Pelia, 22km from Pirakata when news of the advance reached. The makeshift camp was quickly wound up and the leaders melted away.

Maoist top gun makes quick exit as forces close in

As police and central forces geared up at Pirakata for the assault on Maoists, the guerrillas — led by top ranking leader Koteswar Rao alias Kishanji — huddled together at a camp in Barapelia Chowk, 30 km away. They were cheerful, brash in their confidence. They were sure police would retreat, and told villagers not to worry. By late afternoon, the scenario changed dramatically.

As news of the security forces charge came in, the rebels made a quick and silent exit. Kishanji fled just 45 minutes after the first teargas shell was fired at Pirakata, deserting the villagers he had sworn to ‘defend'. He was reportedly smuggled out through the Bengal-Orissa-Jharkhand trijunction along with other senior leaders, PCPA sources revealed. No one, though, was sure about the leader's whereabouts.

Just a few hours earlier, Kishanji had thundered: "Our supporters will hold their ground till the very end. No one will be able to enter our territory." PCPA leader Chhatradhar Mahato strutted around the hut confidently, passing instructions to his men. Everything looked to be in order.

It was around 12.30pm that the TV started showing pictures of the security forces gathering at Pirakata. By 1.30pm, he had a worried look on his face. Police were on the attack. Chhatradhar cut a sorry figure as he sat rooted to a chair. By 2.15pm, the camp looked deserted.

Forces moving cautiously in Lalgarh, ops will take time: Chidambaram19 Jun 2009, 1403 hrs IST, PTI

NEW DELHI: The Centre said the security forces are moving "cautiously" in their operation against Maoists in trouble-torn Lalgarh in West Bengal and
it would take some more time before they complete the task.

"The operation will take considerably more time as security forces are moving towards Lalgarh cautiously. They are also addressing people through loudspeakers and distributing handbills," home minister P Chidambaram told reporters here.

The home minister said operation in Lalgarh was not aimed at local tribals but at the Naxals who have taken control of the area.

"The operation is not against tribals but the Naxals," he said.

Chidambaram said the action against the Maoists were going on according to the plan and it would be successful soon.

"Adequate number of state police have been deployed there. The state police are taking the lead and the CRPF personnel are assisting in the operation," he said.

IAF choppers drop leaflets over Lalgarh
19 Jun 2009, 1320 hrs IST, PTI

PIRAKATA (WB): Two IAF helicopters dropped thousands of leaflets over restive Lalgarh, where security forces are battling Maoist-backed tribals,
urging locals to keep away from the troubled areas.

The leaflets, both in Bengali and Olchiki, the Santhali script, asked locals not to support the Maoists.

Meanwhile, police and security forces, which have launched an operation to flush out Maoists from Lalgarh, have reached Kaima around 8 kms from the restive area, on Friday morning.

They now have to cross an around five kms patch of forest where the movement is expected to be slow in view of the possibility of the ultras having planted landmines in the stretch, a senior police officer said.

Security forces would also be moving towards Lalgarh from Sarenga on the border with Bankura district, he said.

Lalgarh's poverty behind red rage
19 Jun 2009, 0436 hrs IST, Subhbrata Guha, TNN

At first sight, Lalgarh doesn't look intimidating — its nonchalant villagers and the languid pace of life is like any other village. Little gets in
and even less gets out. But beneath the pastoral calm of rural Bengal, Lalgarh has been simmering as the red lava of Maoist rage flowing out of this West Midnapore town, 180 km from Kolkata, now proves.

The state didn't wither away in Lalgarh, it just wasn't ever there. For decades, tribals in Lalgarh, comprising several villages under Binpur-II block in West Midnapore district, sat on the powder keg as Naxals amassed guns and bombs, indoctrinated illiterate village boys and fed on the disillusionment with the laid-back and corrupt CPM administration.

In the last 30 years, the Left Front has not built roads to connect far-flung villages, with virtually one bus plying between district headquarters of Jhargram and Belpaharai daily.

Also, adjoining villages are Amlasole and Amjhora from where first hunger deaths were reported in the state, pointing to the ruling Left Front government's oppression and dispossession. The NREGA has failed to provide succour to Ukil Murmu, Gayanswar Murmu, Gour Murmu and Dhiren Manki living on Ayodhya hills and in villages dotting the forests around Belpahari. Hardly any of them have got work for the mandatory 100 days.

"I got my job card three years ago. For all these years my application for work was pending with the gram panchayat. Last month we got work for laying village roads. That was for 15 days but I haven't received any money yet," says Balaram Hansda of Barnajara village. "As far as I know the money has gone back. No one knows when work will start again. Worse whether it will start at all."

After working for four days, Ukil Murmu, his wife Binti and father Gayeshwar from were paid Rs 1,070. That is all that they have to live off for the remaining 361 days of the year till they get some more work. "There is no more work now. We don't have any land of our now. In this part farming is possible only after rains. We have to beg for jobs from the landowners. There are hundreds of tillers like us who are looking for work. The 100 days work could have helped us live better," says Ukil.

PM wants to know why tribals are on warpath
19 Jun 2009, 0421 hrs IST, Bhaskar Roy, TNN

NEW DELHI: The uprising in the tribal hinterland of Lalgarh taking a heavy toll of lives prompted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday to ask
for a report on the root-cause of the disquiet.

The day after his return from Russia, Singh had a meeting with minister of state for tribal affairs Tushar A. Chaudhary and sought to know the factors contributing to persistent violence across the tribal belt.

The long trail of blood all along the forest-dwellers' route from Andhra Pradesh to the border areas of Bengal, Orissa and Jharkhand has triggered a new urgency in the top echelons of the government to closely examine what ails the aboriginal community.

According to highly placed sources, Chaudhary has already directed the officials in his ministry to prepare a report on the basic causes of tribal unrest around the country. The report will be submitted to the PM soon.

Singh, it is learnt, is of the view that the socio-economic conditions of the tribals need to be studied for a clue to the current spell of violence in Lalgarh in Bengal's Midnapore district.

When contacted, Chaudhary said that his ministry was taking a close look at the series of violent incidents in the tribal areas to see if any pattern had emerged.

"I want to get to the heart of the problem and understand why the tribals are increasingly turning to violence," he told TOI.

The regularity with which the Maoist groups have struck at their targets in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and now Bengal over the past few months, has made the Centre sit up and reckon with the danger lurking deep in the forests.

Many experts view the growing level of jungle violence as an outcome of the failed development process and official corruption.

Two hundred personnel of the specialised anti-Naxal force, CoBRA, began sanitising the Jhitkha jungle as security forces proceeded towards besieged Lalgarh in West Midnapore district.

As Jhitka jungle is a Maoist-dominated area en route to Lalgarh, where Maoist-backed tribals are in control, security personnel are waiting for the Command Battalion for Resolute Action to clear their way of possible landmines, informed a senior police official.

While the forces covered the 10 km distance from Pirakata to Pirakuli, another team of security men drove out from Sarenda in adjacent Bankura district in a pincer movement towards Lalgarh to cut off the escape routes of the Maoists, the police officer said.

The security forces used mine detectors to sweep the roads before driving ahead in heavy vehicles. Two IAF helicopters dropped thousands of leaflets in Santhali and Bengali over Lalgarh asking the people not to let themselves be used as human shields by the Maoists

Armed with AK-47 rifles, Maoists intercepted a group of mediapersons, ordered them to line up on the road and threatened to shoot them in West Midnapore district on Friday.

"We will shoot you, if you don't obey," one of the Maoists barked.

After the mediapersons alighted from the vehicles, the Maoists took away their mobile phones and began laying landmines on and beside the road, a PTI correspondent and lensman who were part of the group intercepted between Pirakata and Lalgarh, saw.

Maoist action squad leader of Lalgarh, Bikash, was among the 100-strong group of ultras.

When a corresponent asked Bikash whether he wished to speak to the press, he said, "I will not. PCPA leader Manoj Mahato will speak to you."

Bikash accused the press of not cooperating with the Maoists. "But we will cooperate with you." Mahato alleged security forces committed atrocities on tribals, including women and children, yesterday at Pirakata where the securitymen demolished a human shie

Revealed: Lashkar's links with Maoists

June 19, 2009 18:35 IST

Investigators on Friday told a Delhi [Images] court that Mohammad Omar Madni, a suspected terrorist, has disclosed about the links between Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Tayiba [Images] and Maoists in Jharkhand.

"He (Madni) revealed that LeT was acting in coordination with CPI (Maoists) in Jharkhand. He has acted as conduit for LeT and provided training to recruits in Azad Kashmir and sent them to India to carry out terror strikes," the public prosecutor told the court which extended the police remand of Madni for seven days.

Delhi Police, which is interrogating Madni, contended that his custodial quizzing was necessary to ascertain his emails details and bank account, which revealed transactions to the tune of Rs 25 lakh.

Metropolitan Magistrate Manish Yaduvanshi allowed the plea of the police, which has arrested the militant under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

50-year-old Madni, a resident of Bihar who acquired Nepalese citizenship, was arrested on June four from near Qutub Minar area in South Delhi and produced before the court after the completion of 14 days police custody.

The investigating agency sought police remand of Madni under the recent amendments of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which empowers them to interrogate an accused in custody for 30 days.

Bakshish Singh, who was appointed amicus curiae, opposed the plea of the police, saying they had already been provided with enough time to interrogate the accused.

It's unfortunate that it has come to this. If the West Bengal government had done its job, Naxals would not have been able to set up such a "liberated" zone. Fact is, things like Singur and Nandigram only give the Naxals fuel to incite people.

The GOI needs to understand that to quell the Naxal insurgency, violence is completely counter-productive. The only way to defeat it is to increase development in these districts. And by development i do not mean SEZs or the so called pseudo-economic reforms that only benefit the city at the cost of the countryside. Focus on agriculture to defeat the naxals.

As a Communist how do you differ from these Maoists from communism??. Is this Ideology based on Chinese Communism? or with other Marxist or Leninist contexts?

Communism is an end, Naxals believe that violence is the way to achieve such an end. Unlike say the CPI which believes that Communism can be brought through democratic means.

Naxalism when it began in the 70s was perhaps the best thing to happen to modern India. Unfortunately, today's rebels have become so blinded by ideology that they don't realise that what they are doing is exactly what the founders of Naxalism fought against.

.
All this shows the hollowness of the commies , their policies, actions et all.

A once flourishing state hasbeen reduced to penury. The earlier the commies are laid to rest the better for the state & the nation.

Why is it that every line you wrote above is looking idiotic to me? I am glad that you are not one of the policy makes of this nation. What do you mean violence is counter productive? Do you mean police operation? If so, there is nothing much we can do about it, can we? To bring about development, first of all those scumbags need to be flushed out like insects. I would go in steps. First, do a major police operation & kill 100 of them. Then declare a cease-fire & give them chance to surrender. I am sure many will. Then after some time, again a police operation. Again cease-fire. Continue till last scumbag naxal is either dead or has surrendered. Only after that can normalcy return.

Naxalism when it began in the 70s was perhaps the best thing to happen to modern India. Unfortunately, today's rebels have become so blinded by ideology that they don't realise that what they are doing is exactly what the founders of Naxalism fought against.

Are you kidding me? Their ideology remains unchanged. They wanted their 'liberty' back then. They want it now. May be their method has changed, but that doesn't mean their ideology in its purest form was very beneficial for India.

Perhaps it is people like you who have made them as strong as they are today. Golden will be the day when that last communist disappears from Indian soil.
