Lahore once again topped the air quality and pollution ranking index in the world Thursday.

In what should be seen as a worrying sign for Pakistanis, Karachi also features on the same global index at number eight.

As per the air quality index, the particulate matter level in Lahore has surged to 367, while in Karachi, it has climbed to 163.

India's capital New Delhi is placed number two on the list as its particular matter score was recorded at 259. China's Wuhan features on number three, with a 198 level particulate matter score.
The air quality index says a particulate matter level that lies between 151-200 is considered harmful for health, while a pollution level between 201-300 is considered extremely harmful for health.
Any pollution level exceeding more than 301 is recognised as "dangerous pollution".
LHC rejects recommendation to close schools in smog-affected areas
The Lahore High Court (LHC), earlier today, denied a recommendation proposed by the Water and Environment Commission to close schools in areas affected by smog.

The commission presented its smog emergency plan in the high court, suggesting that the government announce a 50% attendance policy for private offices.

The LHC, on the other hand, ordered a smog cell be created in the Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The high court also urged authorities to issue a traffic plan to deal with the situation and directed authorities to set up a traffic emergency call line.

"Any citizen should be able to complaint about a traffic jam on the call line," said Justice Shahid Karim.

If someone can just explain to me:

1.) Where are the efforts to control this --- given that this was happening since before the PTI came so they were well-aware of it

2.) Why can't they at least stop husk burning along the damn motorway, where dozens of judges, politicians, generals, etc., cross every day --- forget the common man, the rulers aren't bothered either

3.) Where are all the ruthless administrators gone --- this stuff can't be solved from offices and through directives, because the officers and non-officer grade 'regulators' on the ground will just not do their job out of laziness or take a bribe and allow the crime to go on

We need next level dictatorial psychos to deal with such stuff on a war footing. I guess everyone in Islamabad is too busy with politics...

Neighbors burning stubble- our stubble burning is very low- it even green, with Urban forests
but India not effectively controlling thier side of the border but we have to suffer because of it

Thank a farmer

Sure, you will of course blame the Indian farmers in that region who have been protesting against the government. You will certainly not blame the idiotic Indian middle class who own most of the 300 million cars and perhaps 500 to 800 million two-wheelers.

Sue India for 500 billion dollars for all the issues caused to Pakistan because of stubble burning.

In whole subcontinent is it just these Punjabi and Haryanvi farmers who have to burn stubble?
Aren’t others farming as well?

I don't know about elsewhere in the Subcontinent but in India it is not just in Punjab and Haryana :
In addition to wheat and paddy, sugarcane leaves are most commonly burnt. According to an official report, more than 500 million tonnes of parali (crop residues) is produced annually in the country, cereal crops (rice, wheat, maize and millets) account for 70 per cent of the total crop residue.

Of this, 34 per cent comes from rice and 22 per cent from wheat crops, most of which is burnt on the farm.
