Lahore Metro Train Orange Line to be Constructed on BOT basis

I am always up for innovative ideas but a city with population of 10 million and probably metropolitan area of Lahore with 2x more population would need a serious transportation network to resolve its issues. It obviously does need multiple lines going across the city and should be enough to serve millions of people on regular basis. A dedicated bus service though not bad is not good enough to meet its current and future demand. It has never happened anywhere in the world

We should be following the examples of India and Bangladesh who are going exactly on the right track. Dhaka Metro, Delhi Metro or Bangalore/Namma Metro should have been role model for us

PS: On this very same forum I have defended Lahore metrobus in past and I still stand by my words but when it comes to choosing the best of project, we definitely have been on the losing cause.

Its freaking expensive. Underground is around 4-5 times as expensive as an above ground metro per kilometer.

Considering Pakistan's chronic economic problems I would say PMLN made a pragmatic decision. When the Pakistani economy gets better in a few years and more sustainable from now, the rest of the Metro network can be made underground.

Again I would like to point out,

I am just repeating my ever lasting stance on this issue. This project was shelved in 2008 to incept the idea of metro bus. I am not saying what should be done in the future, what I am saying is what should have been done in the past and learning from the past experience, we must at least rectify our future and not repeat the same mistakes again.

If the orange line of Lahore metro was built, I believe it's cost was around 1.2 billion dollars or similar, that was 80-90 billion rupees back in 2007. We spent 40 billion rupees on metro bus instead... I was in favour of using the same money of metro bus for the underground train service that was partially underground and elevated. Now if the government has finally decided to come to senses they have been tweaking the original project to reduce the underground infrastructure as much as possible. So they basically have less than 2 kilometre of underground network and calling it underground train service. I was in favour of splitting the cost to 2-3 more years but make it a good network for once and for all. We will find the way to waste money anyhow, so at least do good investment for once

@Aether .. the experts have done feasibility study and they have recommended that for orange line. Green line will have much more underground stations.
Are you sure politics influenced the outcome of the feasibility study? It was done by MVA(hongkong based), same group operates in India too.
Cost overrrun is natural in any big project. It always feels you should have taken good decisions yesterday and bad decisions never.

Tram is not caged, this is going to be caged like everything in Pakistan but yes it will be sort of light railway as I am not convinced it truly merits the definition of underground system besides the name calling (though Lahore circular railway is a more appropriate term IMO, unless they dig more tunnels and allocate fair share of underground and elevation for future lines of Lahore Metro)

BOT is build operate and transfer, the Chinese will build it in Lahore and own it for 25 years, earn money after selling the tickets and advertisements and hand it over to the government of Pakistan

In Delhi Metro, the GoI and Delhi Government are equity holders in a JV that runs it. It is not given to third party.

Its not a BOT model where a private party runs the Metro for a certain number of years and takes profits and then hands it over.

Its the Mumbai Metro that is run on BOT model. Reliance is the concessionaire there.

Well these are pity excuses out of your love for PML-N.

I am sure you have never seen or travelled in underground metro system in the world? I am not accusing PML-N only but we Pakistanis has never chosen a leader who would envision long term strategy. PML-N is the biggest example of poster-party in my eyes where they will not spend in long term projects if the date of election is before the deadline of mega project. This is one of the reason why we have never been able to build dams despite crying out loudly on the media all the time.

I am not claiming to be always right but the original project of underground metro in Lahore sounded more logical, feasible and economically right and the only reason for cancellation in my impression is that it was initiated by Q League and they may have used it as election stunt in future despite the fact the whole project would have been completed under the government of Noon.

We do need effective solution for resolving transportation issues in Lahore but Punjab government has betrayed the nation for choosing less important project and deliberately ignored the most effective option for long term solution in my humble opinion.

Well All the Parties were so criticizing on this projects with calling names Jangla Bus and etc etc and Like 30 billion is gonna waste on this project and many other excuses.. this Poster Party is the only party doing something good For the People you have other parties to see their performance in their provinces....

Q leagues was in Federal for 8 years then why they didn't start the project ?

this can be made into Long term simply by adding Trains in the route even they are Extending current Metro to Kala Shah Kaku... 27+5.6 km

Underground would have taken more time more money more resources and more criticism from the people and the opposition Parties

Underground route is preferred one but Metros do have elevated tracks these days in areas where tunneling is not possible. In Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai, we have elevated tracks.

Good to see Pakistan finally taking the initiative to build Metros. I however believed that Karachi would have got first Metro considering its the biggest money earning metropolis in the country.

As soon as Gawadar becomes functional not a single firm will be willing to stay in karachi. Provincial government and MQM have turned Karachi into a hell hole where no one wants to invest.

I don't like any political party in Pakistan but have to confess that despite Q brother/cousins lacks communication skills and possibly education, the amount of work they did during their tenure was probably the most in the history of Pakistan.

Parha likha Punjab made the education in the reach of poor people after making it free for the whole province, there is one school in my local area which used to charge thousands of rupees per month and after the launch of parha likha Punjab scheme was not charging a single rupee for education.

1122 rescue team has been praised worldwide and not only in Pakistan for being so efficient and trained

The number of universities almost doubled in Punjab and Pakistan

The gdp growth rate was one of the highest in the history of Pakistan and their 16 months growth is equivalent to N Leagues 2 years performance

The massive infrastructure of road projects was even praised by some of the guys from N League. There was hardly a 'kachi' road left in my city and the roads were built in sorrounding villages for the first time near my city. It is also true for most of the cities of Punjab as it shortened the distance of various cities I or my relatives travelled and praised afterwards. I know one N leagues leader who once praised Q league by saying the have laid the roads everywhere that we don't have to work anymore so he is busy cleaning the severage system of his constituency.

So many good things I can mention but it doesn't mean they were great as I also have strong reserves against them for being thugs and played a role in Lal masjid and controversial and dark chapters of Pakistan

He asked 2 different questions. In one he asked if the system is underground or like a tram. In engineering sense I said its probably going to be like Dubai or Delhi.

Whats wrong with elevated metro train ? Large portions of Paris metro train is elevated too and it's a beautiful sight to view the densely populated portions of the city from the metro train over bridge.This is coming from my experience.

Also large portions of elevated metro in New York and Chicago too.

Green Line can be converted into Metro Train Anytime...

if it would have taken 7 or 8 years to complete Lahore Green Line Metro what you know how public and Media would have reacted... Plus if it was underground Pipeline broken telephones line sewerage line 2... it would have taken 4 times the Money... Even India And Jakarta Bangladesh And China Chengdu are building Elevated Bus tracks And trains line some parts are underground....


i have been to dubai metro if we make it a standard then bro lahore metro bust track is not enough for a metro train

Well the NESPAK said that Lahore Metro And Islamabad one can be converted into Metro Trains tracks....
