UNITED STATES - 22 JULY 2009
L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its Mission Integration Division delivered the seventh and final aircraft for Phase 1 of the Project Liberty Aircraft (LPA) program to the U.S. Air Force.
"We are extremely proud of this accomplishment. The L-3 team went on contract on September 30, 2008 and delivered all seven aircraft in less than ten months - ahead of the contracted delivery dates. The LPA program was created by the Secretary of Defense as an immediate response to urgent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) needs of our combat forces. We are excited to be part of this ground-breaking acquisition effort and the opportunity to make a significant contribution to our country's current operations," said John McNellis, president of L-3 Integrated Systems Group. "We are also committed to the success of the next Phase of LPA, Aircraft 8 and beyond, to make sure our combat forces have the ISR capabilities they need."
"We've had people working long and hard to get these aircraft out to the troops," said Mark Von Schwarz, L-3 Mission Integration Division president. "Our people and our entire team rose to the challenge, and the first aircraft went from contract award to delivery in just six months and 27 days. We are especially proud of the efforts by our industry partners -- Hawker Beechcraft, Alliant Tech, and Northrop Grumman; as well as our L-3 Communications division partners -- Systems Field Support, ComCept, Wescam, Communication Systems-West, and Platform Integration, who have responded to this demanding schedule."
L-3 Mission Integration will modify a total of 37 Air Force MC-12Ws with sensor packages and communications systems. Mr. Von Schwarz said, "We have received additional orders over the last three months and are aggressively moving out to deliver these aircraft as fast as possible. We have added two more aircraft integration sites to triple our capacity."
The planes are militarized versions of the Hawker Beechcraft Super King Air 350 and feature full-motion video and signals intelligence capabilities to allow its crew of two pilots and two sensor operators to augment information gathered by other systems and provide actionable intelligence to battlefield leaders.
