The Kurganets is a new-generation Russian armored personnel carrier. It is believed that its development commenced in 2011. It was developed alongside the whole family of vehicles. Development process was kept in high secrecy. It was first publicly revealed in 2015. As of 2015 only a handful of pre-production vehicles were built. It is expected that a full-scale production will commence in 2016.

This vehicle is often referred as 'Kurganets', however its exact designation might be different. The infantry fighting vehicle version is referred asKurganets-25. Both of them are members of the same new-generation family of armored vehicles. The APC and IFV versions are essentially identical, except the turret.

The Kurganets is a tracked vehicle. Currently there is a trend to replace tracked APCs with wheeled vehicles, that are less expensive to buy and to maintain. However wheeled APCs have inferior cross-country mobility, comparing with the tracked vehicles. It is worth noting that recently Russia also developed a Bumerang 8x8 APC that was publicly revealed during the same day. The Bumerang was developed alongside Kurganets family of vehicles and automotive components are interchangeable between the vehicles.

The Kurganets armored personnel carrier is a clean sheet design. It is not based on any previous Russian armored vehicle. Many drawbacks typical to most Russian armored vehicles, such as a cramped crew compartment and cramped exit, were fixed.

The Kurganets APC has a welded hull and turret. Its armor is made of special aluminum alloy. Vehicle has modular armor with add-on armor modules. So protection level can be tailored to counter specific threats or to suit mission requirements. It is believed that protection of the Kurganets is superior to BTR-series 8x8 armored personnel carriers.

The Kurganets APC is fitted with new unmanned turret, armed with a 12.7-mm machine gun. It is worth noting that such limited armament would typically keep this vehicle away from the frontline.

It seems that this vehicle has a crew of 3 and can carry 7 dismounts. Access to the troop compartment is via rear door. This vehicle lacks roof hatches for the dismounts. It is unusual feature as all previous Soviet and Russian armored troops transport vehicles had roof hatches.

This new-generation APC is powered by a turbocharged diesel engine, developing 500 to 800 hp. Engine is mounted at the front of the hull. It can be fitted with engine of the Armata main battle tank, or Bumerang 8x8 armored personnel carrier. Engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Vehicle has a hydropneumatic suspension with variable ground clearance.

Despite the bulky appearance the Kurganets APC is fully-amphibious. On water it is propelled by two waterjets, mounted at the rear. It has been reported that this vehicle uses new amphibious propulsion technology and has speed on water of 10 km/h. It is worth noting that add-on armor blocks provide additional buoyancy and stability on water.

It is planned that a whole family of vehicles will be based on the same Kurganets chassis. Some variants have already been developed and are in production.



Variants



Kurganets-25 infantry fighting vehicle. It is fitted with a different remotely-controlled turret. The IFV version is armed with a 30-mm cannon, coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun and 4 Kornet-M anti-tank missiles launchers. Also is seems that the IFV version comes with newly developed countermeasures system. It reduces the chance of being hit by enemy ATGW with semi-automatic guidance
