Kudankulam project gets clearance for power generation

CHENNAI: After much delay in the wake of protests by anti-nuclear activists and villagers, the Kudankulam project is all set to take off.

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERB) has granted clearance for the first 1000MW unit of the Kudankulam nuclear power project.

An AERB press release on Thursday said the clearance was given after the plant complied with all the directives of the Supreme Court. In its May 6, 2013 order, the Supreme Court had imposed several conditions on safety.

"We were satisfied with the safety and other parameters met by the plant officials with regard to the unit 1. Only after several tests and after the plant officials complied with the Supreme Court order, we gave the clearance," SS Bajaj, AERB chief, told TOI.

The plant is set to attain criticality (the actual commencement of chain reaction in the nuclear reactor) in a day or two, according to a plant official. Once the unit attains criticality, power generation will start.

Tamil Nadu will get its much-needed share of 450MW from the first unit. The power produced would be transmitted to the grid if the reactor reaches half its capacity, said an official.

The Russian-made reactor, called Voda Voda Energo Reactor (VVER), uses the pressurized water technology. This is the first such reactor being commissioned in the country.

There is no power cuts more than 10min/day currently....

TN CM is a class apart...

AERB green light for Kudankulam

Supreme Court guidelines have been adhered to, it says

In a major relief to authorities of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has given its nod for controlled fission process or “first approach to criticality” (FAC) for the first unit of the plant.

The FAC is an important step towards the beginning of power production. An AERB release said that while granting the clearance for the FAC, it was ensured that the Supreme Court directives of May 6 were fully complied with. The approval was given after an in-depth review of associated safety aspects.

Clearance for the FAC, however, does not mean the stage is set for the commissioning of the plant soon. Several low-power tests will have to be carried out to verify the conformance of the reactor’s characteristics to design objectives.

The AERB would review the results of the tests before giving clearance for the next stage of commissioning, which would entail a phased increase in the power level of the reactor. However, a senior official of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, which will operate the plant, declined to give any time frame for commissioning the plant.

You are giving more credit than its due mate.
First, current consumption have dropped in TN, due to onset of rain, and climate have started to get cold.
In villages, current cuts still go into hours.
If more units are arent commissioned by next may, we are in for a $hi! hole next year.

Im not a citylite... my home is come under grama panchayat only... we dont see any power cut more than 10min/day... current consumption is dropped??? dont fool ur self... and its not a summer, but even though its not a rainy r winter season too... i accept that we want more power generation before next Feb, else want to suffer some shortage, but not in the scale of 2012-2013 for sure...
