Koreas answer to Type 056 Corvette

The South Korean Navy has taken delivery of its 13th domestically built guided-missile destroyer, which will join patrol missions to defend the nation's shoreline and harbor waters, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said Monday.

Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction delivered the newest PKG-class (Patrol Killer, Guided Missile) patrol ship to the Navy command, located in Jinhae, some 410 kilometers south of Seoul.

The 450-ton high-speed ship can sail at a top speed of 40 knots and is equipped with anti-ship missiles that have a range of 140 kilometers.

It is also fitted with 76mm and 40mm guns, and can accommodate 40 crew members.

The ship will join Navy patrol missions after two months of deployment, the DAPA said.

The Korean PKG class is 450 ton boat, they are not in the same class as type 56 which is more than 1,300 tons. PKG class are essentially near shore missile patrol boats while 056 is a covette with anti-submarine capability. Type 056 is superior in air defence with its air defence missiles, compare with PKG's 76mm and 40 mm, for intercepting incoming anti-ship missiles.

Its more like PLAN Type 056 corvette(1300tons) can go further away from shore and stay on high sea without replenishment for weeks while the Korean 450 tons boat is more likely to last the most 5-8days without replenishment.

Seems like most of China Type 056 will be deployed in SCS(east sea), we need support from S Korea-Japan in ship building to make a better warship.

Navy patrol boat under construction sinks at shipyard

CHANGWON, South Korea, Nov. 25 (Yonhap) -- A moored Navy guided missile patrol boat under construction sank at a shipyard due to strong winds, the shipbuilder said Monday.

Sources said the 430-ton Gumdoksuri Class patrol killer guided missile (PKG) boat started sinking at around 3 a.m. as it was pounded by strong winds and waves. The boat, armed with 76 millimeter guns, was one of 24 being built to replace smaller Chamsuri Class patrol boats serving in the Navy.

The name of the shipyard on the southern coast was not revealed, although the builder confirmed that roughly 60 percent of the work, including the engines, were on board at the time of the accident.

"It started sinking by the stern, resulting in roughly four-fifths of the boat being submerged," a company representative said. He said the bow of the boat was tied to a large vessel.

"There is a chance that water pouring into the boat through opened hatches may have caused her to sink, although the Navy and police will provide more accurate details," the representative speculated.

He, however, said there was no one on board at the time of the sinking.

The shipyard, meanwhile, employed a 3,000-ton capacity crane to try to lift the boat, but this failed because of the water in the hold. It said once waves die down divers will go into the submerged ship to pump out water that will allow it to be re-floated more easily.
