The leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un announced on Friday that his country will stop nuclear tests and launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles starting from April 21, according to state media KCNA.

Kim made the announcement at the third plenary session of the seventh general assembly of the Worker’s Party of Korea, during which the leader revealed Pyongyang’s new strategy and said it will put all efforts to develop its economy.

The decision came as the leaders of the DPRK and the Republic of Korea (ROK) are preparing to hold a significant inter-Korean summit on April 27.

朝鮮如果發展,就是一條新的發展模式,相當於中國在毛主席領導下進行改革開放。左派路線基礎上的改革開放。

Now NK has tested enough and can resume at any time when Americans are acting up.

I also think so.

I believe China's diplomacy has worked. That was a decision made during the Xi-Kim meeting.

Now, the DPRK can begin economic opening up and development, having secured credible nuclear deterrence.

Great now SK can connect to BRI via NK.
Allow some US investment n businesses in NK that serves as an insurance too lol

Win win

New, potential market for China and other friendly countries, as well. If Mr. Kim has listened President Xi well and learned his lessons, he may as well be the Deng Xiaoping of the DPRK.

Socialism with DPRK characteristics.

this decision is very correct

I was expecting such an outcome after President Xi-Kim meeting. Dotard regime is seriously sidelined. Kim was smart to make this announcement before his meeting with Mr. Dotard.

But still, late at night, Mr. Dotard did Twitter jihad and took all the credits. If this is going to let him re-elected, that's fine. President Xi can live with that.

Substance vs. rhetoric.

‘Mission complete’: Kim Jong-un says no need for further nuclear & missile tests

Published time: 20 Apr, 2018

North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs have allowed the country to secure strategic stability and peace, so there is no need for additional missile and nuke tests anymore, Kim Jong-un has proclaimed.

“From April 21, 2018, nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic missile tests will be discontinued,”
the Korean Central News Agency cited Kim as saying, at a plenary meeting of the central committee of the ruling Worker's Party of Korea (WPK).

“North Korea’s nuclear test center will be discarded in order to ensure the transparency of the nuclear test suspension,”KCNA added.

Announcing the country’s new course, the ruling party has declared that North Korea “will never use nuclear weapons, unless there is nuclear threat or nuclear provocation to our country, and in no case we will proliferate nuclear weapons and nuclear technology.”

In the announcement, North Korea noted that the “suspension of nuclear testing is an important process for global nuclear disarmament." Therefore, North Korea is willing to join international denuclearization efforts.

The extraordinary development comes just ahead of Kim's meeting with the South Korean president Moon Jae-in later this month. The announcement also follows US Secretary of State nominee Mike Pompeo’s recent secret meeting with the North Korean leader in Pyongyang.

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, is also preparing to meet Kim in the coming weeks and has, on a number of occasions, vowed that Washington will keep up its "maximum pressure" campaign on North Korea until it agrees to denuclearize.

excellent move, forced US back to the negotiation table and showing its willingness by making these concessions Trump will have to embrace it. In return US will have to provide some incentives like lifting some sanctions and less provocative military drills with SK for peaceful development amid turbulent chaotic threats we have seen the past couple of months. Just brilliant :D , now if a decision of denuclearization can be worked out US no longer has any excuse for putting THAAD

Xi diplomacy :enjoy:

International relations is a never ending game of negotiation. Concessions are easier to achieve when the shift in framing of the situation is actualised.

I hope to see Korea develop and prosper in the future and can't wait until the day on the ground changes begins. With a stable environment, and market access, DPRK will likely become one of the fastest growing economies. Long term this has major geo-strategic implications for China. The buffer of balance of power can be pushed away from the core.

Once a trans Korea rail is a reality, South Korea would functionally no longer be an island, it would be integrated with the continent. This also opens up the possibility of a connection to Japan in the distant future.

NE China would benefit as trade and connectivity beings to grow. Dandong and other border towns were designated as trade zones for DPRK economic reform that didn't previously materialise. The infrastructure on China's side was built but not utilised fully and some not at all. Greater trade would render the NE more market orientated in the long run.

In the medium term, transport infrastructure would be built in NK to handle traffic flows. Deep water ports, highway, railway, tunnels, airports, pipelines, electricity grid, etc. Chinese industrial products would be a hot sell and North Korean products would have a large market to thrive off.

This may also speed up regional electric grid development. Although China has drafted plans to build underwater grid to South Korea (then to Japan), a land grid across North Korea to South Korea would be a much more feasible (and quick) solution to the difference between renewable energy generation and energy consumption capacities in our region.

In a potential opening up of North Korean market, China needs to make sure that it remain in the forefront of it in terms of not only goods (finished goods and infrastructure build-up, but also services, including entertainment, literature, education, and finance.

What if present sanctions prevent Belt and Road Initiative from Northeast China entering through North Korea to South Korea?

Then, I think, there is nor much China can do because the US has greater ability to place sanctions and ask its little minions in Europe to follow the suit.

Losing US market is fine but losing both US and European markets is impractical.

But, if the DPRK kept their word and lived with whatever nuclear deterrence they have without further testing, then, the US would lose its basis for argument. Then, even if the sanctions are in place, China may initiate civilian infrastructure connectivity with the DPRK and then South Korea.

Of course, this also depends on whether the US would demand a regime change in South Korea. The current government is great and peace-oriented, but peace is often anti-antithetical to US interests.

In the game of geopolitics, NK is a world class player. A couple of months back they were deserted by every major power, and was at the blink of facing US military strike, now they managed to turn the table and become a darling of both East and West. All done in a smooth, continuous motion.

With their well educated and highly disciplined work force, there is little doubt that NK can become yet another "East Asia economic miracle" once they start their own version of "opening up and reform" policy.

Hats off to the "Little Rocketman".
