What a wonderful movie I saw yesterday on cable. Was just flipping channels and suddenly this beautiful face strikes me and makes my thumb pause (Pakistani actor-model Iman Ali .... reminded me of our late Nafisa Joseph). The movie gripped me, and the stand out performance was a cameo by our very own Naseeruddin Shah as an old religious scholar. What a performance! Anyways, coming back to the movie, its basically set in Pakistan (and the US) and shows the struggle contemporary Pakistan society is going through between Liberal Modernists if you will and Fundamentalists. Lots of angst against the US and racial profiling too. Burning woman's right issues in light of Sharia and its growing intolerance and spread in mainstream Pakistani society. I really liked the movie and I understand its banned in India though i really cant understand why! In fact more than pakistanis I would really exhort all Indian brothers here to see this movie ..... gives a very human touch to the other side.

Thanks for liking and promoting one of the mentionable movies in recent years from Pakistan film industry (don't like calling it any wood). It shows that we've got talent and courage to present controversial subjects in film, especially, if you consider the circumstances, and political scenario of the days it was shown in cinema houses.

But, we lack resources and encouragement from our governments.

It is interesting to learn that it is banned in India.

It was released in 2007 I think so we Indians are getting to see it 2 years later .... but the storyline and the concept is still very contemporary even today. Yes, knowing the little I know about Pakistan, it takes BIG balls to make a movie like this. I understand the Director and his family went on an extended "holiday" out of Pakistan when it was released. Seems there was even a fatwa put against this movie or something by sections of people there. Seems the movie had a big fan in none other than Musharaf himself.

Anything Islamic that is remotely controversial gets banned in our country man ..... we have learned (or rather evolved) to be extra sensitive on certain issues. Which frankly I think is absurd.

In fact mid-way through the movie I did not even know it was a pakistani movie till I heard one of the hero's confined in a US detention center say "Indians killing Muslims in Kashmir." That said, thankfully that was the only negative referral to India I heard in the movie (or the part I saw).

u know - i am a muslim even though my parents tried to make me religious, even askign me to serve namaz. i never became one. but for once i realized how the name of god - is such a great music. every time i go for some important thing - i must listen to that song - call me superstitious or crazy but my problems are solved mostly.

may be it has more to do with that confidence level you get.

Same here man. I am not a very religious guy. But I have grown up believing in God. And I pray when i can, visit the Fire temple whenever I can. But I have certain small prayer lines which I subconsciously chant and our guardian angel Asho Farohar which i wear as a pendant and keep holding and praying whenever I am in a fix or scared (like before exams or when the plane is taking off!).

It is all to do with faith and belief and something to hold on to when everything around you seems to be going wrong and bad. It is a major anchor and a sense of strength and for each one of us is something very personal.

who says it is banned in india. i watched it in the theaters and even the orignal DVD is available in the markets made by an indian compny.

Yeah I read that somewhere when I came into office today and was Googling for it .... sorry, but I can't recall where now. Duhastmish is partly right I guess .... probably propaganda, though not anti-India ..... getting something "banned" or "controversial" or in trouble with the "Police" (moral or normal) or in the "News" for all the wrong reasons is a tried and tested sure fire publicity stunt of Bollywood and TV here. The "banned" books always get picked up like hot cakes, though they may bore you to tears later on.

I can confirm that its not banned in India as well. I have seen it in theatre and its availbel on DVD as well.

There might have been calls from some fringe elements to ban it but I doubt it as there was nothing offensive about Islam in anyway.
