KARACHI: A young passerby was killed and five others, including a boy, were wounded when a clash erupted between two rival groups on Abul Hasan Ispahani Road on Wednesday evening, according to police and rescue services’ officials.

A Mobina Town police officer said that the clash took place near a mosque in Abbas Town. As a result, he added, one person lost his life and five others sustained injuries. The officer stated that one of them was rushed to the nearby Patel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity could not be ascertained till late in the evening because he did not have a CNIC card in his pocket. A Chhipa spokesperson said that the deceased seemed to be aged around 30.

A senior police officer on condition of anonymity told Dawn that a Sabeel was installed near Ameer Muavia Masjid, affiliated with banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), on Abul Hasan Ispahani Road where Noha was being played on loudspeakers.

The officer said some SSP activists objected to it which led to a scuffle between them and some members of Shia sect at around 3:45pm. The situation aggravated when someone resorted to firing, wounding six persons.

The other wounded persons were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

They were identified as Shahrukh Hussain Jaferi, 23, his father Kamran Hussain Jaferi, 54, Mohsin Akmal, 12, Arsalan Zakir, 30, and Muaaz Madni, 41.

Later, SSP East Qamar Raza Jiskani in a statement said that the deceased man was a shopkeeper and his probable name was Mehboob.

The police have arrested a man, Irfan, from the clash site and suspected that he was involved in the firing. A case has been registered against him on behalf of the state on the complained lodged by a police officer. The FIR charged him with rioting, murder and attempted murder.

“The situation in the area has been brought under control,” the senior officer said.

The SSP said that both tracks of Abdul Hasan Ispahani Road had been cleared for movement of vehicular traffic.

The deceased was a worker in a nearby Sweets shop, Poor him, Wasn’t involved in the conflict.

It is unethical to play anything at loudspeakers in front of mosques, There are loads of places where you can set up your tents and play all you want but why in front of a mosque ?

What should we take this gesture as ?

Every type of Jaloos be it for Shias or Sunni should be done in a closed area away from the general public areas. You can't simply lock down the country. In GCC there are dedicated areas (enclosed courses) for such kinds of Jaloos.

But in Pakistan, there is no law and order.

Forget where I pray. Let's do what you suggested

Implement sharia. No juloos. No violence

You being a lefty would whine and cry anyways. Let's make you whine by implementing sharia
Keep dreaming, buddy. Our global strength ensures that is not going to happen. You and your bigoted chaddis - nationalists, Islamists, Hindutva, and other tribalists with a hyperactive caveman brain - are a dying breed.

Taliban, Trump, Modi, and others are the last-ditch efforts of a community in its death throes. This world has no need for reptile-brained idiots.

I haven’t seen any Major Juloos or the country taken hostage other than Muharram.

It’s been 3 hell days since Phone is off and Foodpanda is down.

This is highly unethical and yet it is wined “Oppression of Minority”.

Point is, No hate against any sect.

If a parent criticizes his child for wrong, Child is good if he understands and mends. But if the child thinks of his parent as an enemy, What can you expect ?

100% Agree, moreover, every single month they have some kind of Jaloos.

Aw-shucks. Do you pray at this SSP mosque?
SSP may be too liberal for some here

That’s where I disagree - they are Pakistan’s future for certain and likely India’s future.

Depends on your perception of time. I would give it 50 years - no more. 50 years does not seem too long to me.
