Khamenei says US can not be trusted
By AFP Published: July 22, 2013
TEHRAN: Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Sunday that Washington was “not trustworthy”, after former US officials and lawmakers urged diplomacy with the Islamic republic’s incoming president Hassan Rowhani.
“I said at the beginning of the year that I am not optimistic about negotiations with the US, though in the past years I did not forbid negotiating with them about certain issues like Iraq,” he told top officials at an iftar evening meal that breaks the fast.
Khamenei said in March he was “not optimistic” over the prospects of direct talks with Tehran’s arch foe on the sidelines of its nuclear negotiations with major powers.
“The Americans are not trustworthy and they are not honest in their encounters. The stance of American officials over past months once again confirms that one should not be optimistic,” he said at the iftar, attended by centrist cleric Rowhani and outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The comments from Khamenei, who has the final say in the regime’s macro policy issues, came less than a week after former US officials and dozens of American lawmakers called for President Barack Obama to pursue diplomacy with Rowhani.
In a letter to Obama, the ex-policymakers said the election of Rowhani, who takes office on August 3, “presents a major potential opportunity.”
“We strongly encourage your administration to seize the moment to pursue new multilateral and bilateral negotiations with Iran once Rowhani takes office and to avoid any provocative action that could narrow the window of opportunity for a more moderate policy out of Tehran,” they wrote.
And two members of the House of Representatives -Republican Charles Dent and Democrat David Price – have led a call for Obama to “utilise all diplomatic tools” with Iran’s new president. The lawmakers noted that the presidency in Iran had limited powers but said it “would be a mistake not to test” Rowhani.
“In interacting with the world it’s a skill to continue your path without the other side being able to prevent you. If not you have lost,” Khamenei added, alluding to Iran’s future nuclear talks with world powers after Rowhani, who once served as his country’s top nuclear negotiator, takes over from Ahmadinejad.
Rowhani who won a June presidential election has since vowed to engage constructively with the international community and to ease tensions raised by Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
“Moderation in foreign policy means neither surrender nor confrontation but constructive and efficacious interaction with the world,” Rowhani has said.
Obama at the start of his first term in office in 2009 offered talks with Iran, which has not had relations with the United States since its 1979 Islamic revolution which overthrew the pro-Western shah.
The United States has led a drive to cut off Iran’s oil exports, its key source of revenues, as a way to pressure the regime over its controversial nuclear work.
Western powers and Israel believe the programme is being used to develop an atomic bomb, although Iran insists it is solely for peaceful purposes.

He's right.

Remember all the crying that the USA was doing over "Chinese hacking"?

Then Snowden appears, and reveals that it is in fact the USA who are hacking communications from the entire world! Even from their own allies!

Every government hacks to the best of their ability, but crying about being the victim when you are by far the greatest perpetrator, that is just too much hypocrisy.

Like the Chinese government does not spy wherever it can. Doh. Note that i'm not saying governments shouldn't spy (even on their allies). It's better to spy and know what your allies and enemies are *really* up to, than to see misinformation or lies lead to war.

And the Chinese government has made it a policy to steal technological developments and then sell them without paying any royalties.

We of NATO don't trust Khamenei either.

The fact to be dealt with is we can enforce our demands, and the Iranians don't even allow nuclear inspectors into their country to prove that their nuclear program is (and stays!) of peaceful nature.

Taqiyah much? It was known that Taliban and Saddam hated Iran...

Read my post properly Indian. I already said that all governments hack to the best of their ability, but not all of them cry about being victims while being the biggest perpetrators.

Khamenei is right. The USA is a murderous nation and will use any access to subvert the country through internal rebellions.

China had better stop selling stolen technology to stay friends with the NATO nations that buy so much from their factories.

I don't doubt that.

US does what every country does with some amounts of conscience. Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya etc are all too many examples for all to see.

peacefan is not Indian .....he is dutch (doesn't appear to be a false flag either)

correct :) i'm born and raised Dutch, my parents are both Dutch and all of my grandparents are Dutch except for 1 grandmother who was born in Germany. I was raised in a small village here, and moved to Amsterdam.NL when I was 18, i'm 36 now.

Not ALL governments hack......and it has nothing to do be abilities either.

I am not against hacking ......I only wish Indian govt. would do a bit more of that ...........and put a lot more efforts in stealing Hi Tech stuff.

In any case all nations can be trusted to look after their own interests. That is the extend of trust any nation has ....be it India, China or USA.

Yeah because Dutch people happen to care about all the issues that Indians happen to care about, and "stand up" for rights only when it doesn't involve India. Gotcha.

You must've missed the post I made about Indians' kaste system that I don't like enslaves certain kastes to do dirty jobs without paying them proper wages for it.

Yeah, you're here on a Pakistani Defence forum, getting upset when Pakistanis refer to India as a land of rape. Like in this thread:

http://www.defence.pk/forums/senior...ather-rapes-five-daughters-2.html#post4541172 (Why so upset?)

You hate China and use all the same arguments that Indians use on us regarding Tibet.

I've never seen a Dutch person so valiantly defend India before. I don't buy it.
