The Muslim Educational Society in Kozhikode has issued a circular prohibiting female students from wearing veils in its institutions across the country, The News Minute reported on Thursday. The group runs 35 colleges and 72 schools, and has around one lakh students on its rolls.

Muslim Educational Society President PA Fazal Ghafoor issued the circular on April 17, but media reports emerged only on Thursday. The circular, while banning veils that cover faces, adds: “Institution heads and officer-bearers of the local management of the institutions should be vigilant.”

The circular quotes a Kerala High Court order from December 2018, which dismissed a plea filed by two female students of Christ Nagar Senior Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram, seeking to wear headscarves and full-sleeve shirts. The High Court, upholding the school’s refusal to grant permission for such clothing, said in its order that collective interest must supersede individual interest.

“According to the High Court order, female students should not wear garments that cover their face,” the Muslim Educational Society circular said. “This should be implemented without giving way to controversy.”

The circular said it is necessary to discourage all “undesirable practices on the campuses”, The Times of Indiareported. “Dresses that are unacceptable to the mainstream society, whether modern or religious, cannot be promoted,” it added.

Ghafoor told The Times of India that the circular had nothing to do with the Sri Lankan government’s decision to ban face veils in the aftermath of the serial bombings that killed 253 people. He said the decision to ban veils was taken before the Sri Lankan government’s order.

The circular said that the new rule should be implemented from the 2019-’20 academic year.

President of religious organisation Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, Sayyid Muhammad Jifri Muthukkoya Thangal, opposed the circular. “The Muslim Educational Society has no right to interfere in religious practices,” he said. “Unlike Samastha, they’re not an organisation entitled to make those kinds of statements.”

Ghafoor had courted controversy in 2014 by claiming that veiling was un-Islamic and a western import. He had also said that wearing the niqab continuously can cause Vitamin D deficiency in Muslim women.

On Wednesday, an editorial in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana had called for a ban on face coverings throughout the country, arguing that this might pose a danger to national security. However, the party later distanced itself from the editorial.

ts order that collective interest must supersede individual interest.
same type of statement when Afzal guru was hanged...

The gravity of the crime… is something which cannot be described in words. The incident, which resulted in heavy casualties, had shaken the entire nation and the collective conscience of the society will only be satisfied if the capital punishment is awarded to the offender

stupid judgement

. . .
Why do these people always target women? You see hate crimes against muslims and they target women. These governments targets women. It is the same as giving democracy with the rifle. They want to give women rights by stripping them of their clothes..lol wtf is happening to the world.

Yes yes wanting to see someones face before they walk into a crowded public space is same as telling someone to take their clothes off, all of these steps wouldn't have taken place around the world if the faithful weren't using burkas to blow themselves in public to kill innocent people.

Thats very good. What is the connection between wearing a veil for modesty have to do with wearing a veil to kill people? how does murdering someone make the murders faithful?

I can argue with you that If there was no foreign occupation of muslim lands or drone attacks that kill indiscriminatnly then there wouldn't be any "islamic" terrorism. But it is not that simple is it?
If you are trying to say that innocent muslims are responsible for terrorism in the world then I think you are very wrong and people like you are the problem with the "faithful" today.

lets not hurry up our verdict.
its more of an important gesture n less implementation.
but it might pave way for real reforms too. like those in past in late 1800s.

How do you differentiate who is wearing a veil for modesty and who is wearing to kill someone?

I have no criminal intent. But each time I enter a mall, a hotel, an airport I get patted down and my bags are x-rayed. This is because the security person does not know my intent.

One of the ways to identify a potential threat is to look into their eyes. With a Burqa this isn't possible.

And don't give the justification that this is part of an islamic dress code. there are millions of muslim women who don't wear it. In fact I remember I was tread banned when I posted a picture of a Burqa wearin girl in a thread on Islamic Dresses.

Also don't say that it is a free choice. I have seen many women who remove the Burqa as soon as they are away from their family. Clearly they wear it only because they are forced by family.

How many burkha clad women have blown themselves up in kerala?

0 probably.

This is just another attack on Islam. Probably some liberal slimeballs run the education society.

No connection whatsoever.

He's just a sellout who hates his own people and religion.

Firstly, I was just making the point that it is ironic that non-muslim people talk about women rights and they actually want to dictate the dress code for these women. Second point was that all muslims don't have to pay or are even responsible for the wrong doings of some people who claim to be muslim. Muslims don't have to be sorry for anything. It is simple as that.

Lastly please don't talk about islam when you know nothing about islam. As far as what you have came across when it comes to muslim men and women I would say that you have never done any population statistics and you are just making claims.

How many burqa clad women have you interviewed in your life time? It is safe to say 0. Don't make these broad generalizations about muslim women or any women. I doubt you have been to muslim neighborhoods going to every house and asking if they are forced to do things. Hindu women have a lot of issues in their society and you should first fix those. Then come to muslim women and talk about equality.

The 'faithful' are blowing themselves up because the 'West' is attacking the Muslim world and killing hundreds of thousands. It's called 'blowback'.

I suggest that if you want to criticise the people who kill innocents, you start with the White house.

They are an Institution that have autonomy on imposing a dress code like any other institution in India. Muslim women who wants to wear face veil can look for Muslim schools that allow it. There are prominent Christian Schools that don't allow wearing any sorts of religious symbols including head scarf, cross etc... It's up to their parents where they want to send their kids.

A school management can impose a certain way of dressing for students. I can't say I shouldn't wear red coloured uniform, I can wear whatever I want, it's my fundamental right.

Nobody is stripping women ffs, just imposing a law in private institution.

Hmm so Sri Lankan Christians bombed Iraq? What about Yazidis? They didn't attack or invade anyone but why were they massacred and their women taken as sex slaves by the ''faithful''?
