Kenyans Say Chinese Investment Brings Racism and Discrimination

go build a few toilets first then come back and lecture us on poverty, poor and manners
Don't derail the thread. It is about China and Chinese racism in Kenya. I live in a democracy - I can lecture you on anything I feel like. If you don't like it - go cry in a corner.

Keep living in your beloved democracy. China was the first democratic republic in Asia, guess you don't know, it was a disaster and we ditched it. you can keep it since it was handed to you by your beloved colonial master.

No surprises that China haters are coming to the conclusion that all Chinese are racist based by few isolated instances.

@ChinaToday @haidian
Let them be. Our Indian friends here are just jealous. They may not admitted it but deep down they know it themselves. We shouldn’t stop anyone from expressing their desperation.

Please spare everyone the false indignation. On this forum, Americans are painted with the same broad brush on any issue on any day.

Yawn. Everything about China is always a disaster - tell me something I don't know. And stick to the topic - the Chinese disaster that is being discussed here is their racism in Africa.

Chinese national arrested and charged with KSh 7 million fraud

A Chinese national was on Monday, October 8, arraigned and charged before a Nairobi Court after detectives connected him to a fraud scheme running into millions of shillings. Zhao Ronghai, according to detectives, allegedly obtained goods amounting to KSh 7, 107,526 by false pretense from a Nairobi business premise.

The development came at a time when it is feared that the rate at which Chinese nationals are getting involved in crime is on an upward trajectory.

On Friday, October 5, the detectives nabbed five Chinese nationals in a posh estate in Nairobi. When searched, it was established they were in possession of equipment that could pose a rik to national security. Among the possessions seized included military uniforms, smoke bombs, tear gas canisters, boots, laptops among other items.

SGR Employees Expose Shocking Racist Actions by Chinese Bosses

August 21, 2018

Kenyans working on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) have exposed how the Chinese workers have practicing blatant racism and mistreating them in their jobs.

In a report compiled by the Standard, the SGR workers revealed their tale of pain, anguish and broken dreams mostly due to the extreme racial discrimination exercised by the Chinese.

The SGR - a flagship project by President Uhuru Kenyatta - was supposed to be handed over to the Kenyan crew through a hands-on skill transfer process.

But sadly, the Kenyan crew only took charge of the train once - the maiden Madaraka Express trip on May 31, 2017, when President Uhuru launched the Ksh372 billion standard gauge railway line connecting Mombasa and Nairobi.

Since then, the Chinese took back control of the commuter trains running on the new line and the fully-trained Kenyan drivers' only privilege is to take seats in the driver's cabin and watch as the Chinese navigate the train to and fro Mombasa and Nairobi.

According to some of the employees, the Chinese are adamant about the agreed skills transfer as they plan to prolong their stay and remaining relevant to the project.

For instance, the controls on the trains are programmed in Chinese which makes it nearly impossible for the Kenyans to do even basics such as troubleshooting.

Worse racist actions include the "unwritten rule" that prohibits Kenyans dining on the same tables with the Chinese in the SGR cafeterias.

Besides, Kenyans cannot commute on the same company vans as the Chinese to get dropped home after work: "You cannot board a van that drops us in the evening even if there's only one Chinese on board. You will have to wait," one employee is quoted.

The Chinese workers are also privileged to do what would easily land Kenyans in trouble including smoking in the driver's cabins, sleeping inside the coaches and answering calls of nature on the tracks.

One Kenyan employee noted: "They are chain smokers and they do it inside the driver's cabin. We do not have washrooms in the driver’s cab, so some relieve themselves on the track lines."

Moreover, whenever a Kenyan is fired, they are replaced by a Chinese which has seen them outnumbered as there are 50 Chinese drivers against 38 locals.

Some of the Chinese who came in during the construction phase have now taken over jobs that can be done by Kenyans including landscaping, pruning flowers, clearing thickets, running apartments and cooking.

The height of this discrimination has seen Kenyans employed with engineering backgrounds doing menial jobs such as cleaning and garbage collection and get paid less than a quarter of what their Chinese counterparts earn for the same job.

China has brought more development to Africa than any other partner -AU
October 18, 2018

FILE: 29th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU.

African Union Member States have expressed concern at what they termed as the bashing of Chinese Cooperation with Africa from some sectors of the media and some western countries.

The AU Member States voiced this concern during a forum to review some of the resolutions of the 3rd Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation that was themed a New Blue Print for a Win-win Cooperation and Common Development.

The African Countries want the African Union to come up with stringent measures to curb the negative perception that China is slowly colonizing the continent through its massive investment on the continent.

Responding to concerns, Adviser on Strategic Partnerships to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr. Nadine Elhakim said China has brought a lot to the African continent than any other partners.

She said China took the risk of long-term investment in Africa when other partners thought doing so was risky.

Dr. Elhakim said China was the only partner that had developed a business model on infrastructure as it had a realisation that no meaningful development could be achieved in Africa with poor infrastructure.

She said Africa needs in excess of 100 billion dollars for infrastructure and that China has offered a share of these funds to improve infrastructure in Africa states.

Dr. Elhakim said the partnership between China and Africa will also see more trade between China and the continent.

And Head of Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the African Union, Ambassador Lui Yuxi said the China Africa partnership is different as it was built on mutual respect and assistance.

He said unlike other partners, China has resolved not to get involved in any African Country’s internal affairs but strictly limit its partnership to development.

Mr. Yuxi said China does not want to colonise any African State as has been insinuated but wants to mainly exchange its technological know how with African States in order to transform lives.

And Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Susan Sikaneta said Africa including Zambia holds the partnership with China in high esteem as it has proved that it was an all whether Friend to the African continent.

And Zimbabwe’s Deputy Ambassador to Ethiopia, Winipeg Moyo said the negative publicity and perception about the China Africa partnership is making the citizenry in many African states to criticise their governments over the cooperation between the two.

Speaking at the same function, President of the Board of Trustees of Centre for Dialogue, Research and Cooperation, CDRC President Ambassador Seyoum Mesfin said China’s policy of non-interference in African countries internal affairs and china’s preference to complement Africa’s development within the framework of win win cooperation and mutual benefits laid a foundation that could not be broken.

This is according to a statement issued by Inutu Mwanza, the First Secretary for Press and Tourism at the Zambia Embassy in Ethiopia.
