Astana, Sep 2 (EFE).- Kazakhstan is to export uranium to the United States and Canada through China as part of the Central Asian nation's efforts to open up new supply routes for the nuclear fuel, state-owned energy company Kazatomprom said Wednesday.

The transportation agreement was hammered out between the Kazakh company's CEO, Askar Zhumagaliyev, and China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation, or CNEIC, head Liu Chunsheng, Kazatomprom said.

"The Agreement provides for temporary storage of goods and transit through China to the western ports of the USA and Canada," Kazatomprom said in a statement.

The Kazatomprom CEO is part of the government and business delegation that Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev took to Beijing this week for the Sept. 3 celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the Allied victory against Japan in World War II.

Kazatomprom said China's cooperation with Kazakhstan, which dominates the world's production of uranium, would enable it "to diversify supply routes for its uranium products on the world market."
