Zbigniew Brzezinski was an *American* of Polish ancestry. He was Carter's National Security Advisor. Jimmy Carter left in January 1981. You make it sound like he was the sole driver behind the US policy on Afghanistan. You ignore Brzezinski's long career of detente towards communist Eastern Europe.

Poland's fight under the Lech Walesa was more monumental than the Afghan war. Cold war was always about Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe and the threat it posed to Western Europe.
