Four teenage girls were injured as troops opened fire on people who were protesting against the Army showing up in their village for hosting an Iftaar event outside a mosque in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shupian district on Monday.

Sources said before Iftaar, an army unit of 34 Rashtriya Rifles came to the Jamia mosque in Dreed Kalipur village and erected a make-shift cubicle outside. The locals asked the army to retreat as they were already informed by local Auqaf that holding an event in the village would cause tensions given the high tempers against government forces over recent civilian killings, sources told Kashmir Dispatch. Sources said the army, however, refused to leave and tried to host the event. “An army unit came to village to organize an Iftaar party but people not only refused to attend it but also threw whatever eatables Army had brought with them,” witnesses said.

An unnamed official was quoted as saying that police had no information about army hosting Iftar in the village. The army’s refusal to leave led to clashes and the troops opened fire, injuring four girls. Two of the injured girls Aqsa Jan, daughter Mohammad Ayoub Magray, and Shobi Jan, daughter of Abdul Qayoom Hajam, have been referred to a Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment. Shobi has a bullet injury in her right arm. While as two sisters Shakira Akther, 17, suffered injury above the ankle and Shaafi Jan, 15, has injuries in right leg were admitted at Public Health Centre Harmain. A police spokesman said that an army patrol had gone to the mosque to host an Iftaar event with the locals. “It is learnt that during the Iftaar, some miscreants pelted at the army. While withdrawing the army party made some aerial firing . In the process it is learnt that 4 injuries were reported to different hospitals. All the injured are stated to be stable,” the police spokesman said. Army’s defence ministry spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said details regarding the incident are being ascertained.
