Karzai slams US, Pakistan in farewell speech

abul: Outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday blamed the United States for his country's long war, a final swipe at the country that helped bring him to power 13 years ago but towards which he has become increasingly bitter.

His farewell speech came days ahead of the planned swearing in of a new president, Ashraf Ghani, after months of potentially violent crisis over a disputed election that ended in a power-sharing deal, yet to be tested, with rival Abdullah Abdullah.

Karzai blamed both the United States and neighboring Pakistan for the continuing war with the Taliban-led insurgency and warned the new government to be “be extra cautious in relations with the US and the West”.

The conflict kills thousands of Afghans each year and has claimed the lives of more than 2,200 American and other international forces in Afghanistan.

“One of the reasons was that the Americans did not want peace because they had their own agenda and objectives,” Karzai said.

He did not elaborate, but in the past has suggested continued violence has been an excuse for the United States to keep bases in the country.

He also accused Pakistani power players of trying to control Afghanistan's foreign policy.

“Today, I tell you again that the war in Afghanistan is not our war, but imposed on us and we are the victims,” Karzai said. “No peace will arrive unless the US or Pakistan want it.”

In recent years, Karzai has sharply denounced the United States for the deaths of Afghan civilians in air strikes and for holding suspected Afghan militants prisoner without trial.

The relationship deteriorated to near breaking point this year, when Karzai refused to sign a key security pact with the United States.

He said he had travelled to Pakistan, where much of the Taliban's leadership is believed to be based, at least 20 times seeking a negotiated end to the war, but his efforts were thwarted.

Neither the US nor the Pakistani embassies in Kabul had immediate comment on Karzai's speech.

Karzai has been in power since 2001 after being plucked from virtual obscurity by the United States following the overthrow of the Taliban's radical government for sheltering Al Qaeda's terrorist leadership after the 9/11 attacks on the US.

The deterioration of his relationship with the West was seen by some as an effort to shape his legacy as an independent leader rather than a US puppet as maintained by the Taliban.

Karzai was barred by the constitution from running for a third term this year.

wow this guy is real piece of work I must say. he is so blatantly shameless that he must have stunned his other Northern Alliance partners who have plundered, looted and murdered the Afghans during this sham government. No wonder people are hoping that Taliban return.. not just in pashton dominated south but even in the North.

what can I say after I watched the story of an American Marine
about the Northern Alliance that will be ruling Afghanistan.
This is what Winning Looks Like?

.
Pakistan should not interfere in Afghanistan & should treat it as an independent country & Afghanistan must recognise the Durand line , & should not support separatism in Baluchistan & the Pakhtunistan issue ,
ISI should not interfere & promote militancy in Afghanistan & Afghanistan should not allow Indians or other intel agencies to promote separatism & militancy in Pakistan
Pakistan must fence & seal the border with Afghanistan & guard it vigorously
there is no other way than this, Pakistan & India should also stop their proxy wars against each other , & resolve their issue in a realistic manner ( in the world of geo-politics it is realism & not morality which matters ) an understanding between India & Pakistan is a necessity for a stable Afghanistan , the motto for stability for both Pakistan & Afghanistan is peace with itself & its neighbours

it has to be a vice versa , where both Pakistan , India & Afghanistan respects each others sovereignty & refrain from creating trouble for each other be it ISI or Raw or Khad , for this the bilateral security agreement must be signed between Afghanistan & the U.S , the U.S needs to stay there for at least another 10 years to refrain both Pakistan, India & Afghanistan from interfering in each others internal affairs , in this case U.S/NATO can be a great pressure point for all the hawks in ISI, Raw & Khad

Issue is Pakistan considers Afghanistan as her backyard and a subservient nation. Afghanistan considers Pakhtuns as her nationals, they have rejected Durand Line in the same way China does not accept McMahon Line. Pakistan thinks Kashmir is part of Pakistan and India thinks Pakistan supports, trains and harbours terrorists who creat trouble in India.

Good points, but unfortunately its not going to happen. Geopolitics in this part of the world is so thoroughly convoluted, that unraveling the knots could take forever.

ur right bro but thing is the game has grown way to bigger than most think here

US is planning something big an so is china , iran , afghanistan but the problem vith pakistan is that its still stuk with past prejudices and prblems

as for india its not even in the picture and as soon as US leaves its curtains to indian presence in afghanistan but the twist here is it will be a much much bigger problem when US will leave this theater and might bring results which pakistanies dont even anticipate or want to aknowledge

as for karzai wellhe is loosing his power for once and for all times to come
