A day after proving its majority in a trust vote in the Karnataka assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party government under B.S. Yediyurappa has made its first significant move by banning celebrations of Tipu Jayanti — the birth anniversary of 18th century Mysuru king Tipu Sultan.

The Karnataka chief minister’s official Twitter handle shared the decision through his official handle, along with the order, written in Kannada.

Although the chief minster’s tweet had no explanation, BJP Karnataka has tweeted the same order with a single line: “Our Govt has cancelled observing controversial & communal Tippu Jayanti.”

According to the official order, Virajpet BJP MLA K.G. Bopaiah wrote to Yediyurappa, requesting him to cancel Tipu Jayanti celebrations by the state Kannada and culture department, highlighting opposition to such celebrations, particularly in Kodagu district, and the violence it had led to in the past.

“After discussion in the cabinet, it was decided that Tipu Jayanti should not be celebrated from here onwards and a government order has been issued to this effect,” Yediyurappa told reporters.

BJP’s sustained criticism

Tipu Jayanti celebrations were started by former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s Congress government in 2015 amid strong opposition from the BJP then. The day on which the annual celebrations would take place was November 10. The first official celebration in 2015 was marred by widespread protests and violence in Kodagu district, leaving a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) worker dead.

In the face of BJP, VHP and rightwing organisations’ sustained criticism of Tipu, a Muslim ruler, celebrations were continued by the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government led by H.D. Kumaraswamy under thick security cover. On July 23, the government collapsed after losing a vote of confidence in the assembly.

Siddaramaiah reacted to the cancellation of festivities by calling it a “big mistake.”

The decision to discontinue Tipu Jayanthi by @BJP4Karnataka is wrong & a big mistake. Tipu was not recognised just because he is from minority community but because of his contribution as a ruler. He fought bravely against British & initiated many development works.@INCKarnataka

PTI quoted Siddaramaiah as having said that Tipu had not only worked for the development of the then Mysuru state, but that he had also “laid the foundation to the KRS dam, worked for development of industries, agriculture and trade, all for the love of freedom.”

‘First freedom fighter’

Tipu is widely considered to be one of the first to resist the British East India Company. He was killed in May 1799 while defending his fort at Srirangapatna against British forces.

The Kodava people of Kodagu district, a martial race, however believe that Tipu led forced conversions to Islam and had imprisoned thousands of their people during his rule. This and other charges of Tipu’s intolerance towards Hindus has been disputed by historians who see him largely as having been a secular ruler with a modern outlook.

Tipu Sultan Pakistan ka hero hae : PMIK in NA

Is Tipu's tomb going to be destroyed as well?

Now that he is claimed as National Hero of Pakistan... one can expect many things...

GoP can ask Modi to send the remains of the Lion of Maysur to Pakistan... will help the peace process!
Sorry not interested

Tipu Sultan is a legendary East Pakistani
I think your geography is weak. Mysore is in South India not East Pakistan

.
Sad. He was an Indian hero who valiantly fought against the British. Yes, may be he committed some atrocities towards Hindus but then there are many Hindu rulers too who committed atrocities against Hindus. I despise those who appease Muslims, but actions like these are eroding Indian society's basic fabric.

Actions by bjp seems like they want to do every discriminatory and unacceptable thing in this tenure, maybe they think it's their last

This was classic example of appeasement. Which is one of the reason why BJP got to power and won the General Election. If Tipu's birth was celebrated since decades, then fine but this was a recent election drama created by one party for votes.

He is certainly not an Indian hero, at best he is a islamic hero as demonstrated by his admiration in pakistan.

If such bigots are the basis of Indian basic fabric, its better such fabric get shredded and a new fabric come up in its place.

Can you name one Hindu ruler who committed atrocities against Hindus ?

Time to start celebrating Hanuman Jayanti in Karnataka.

In any case Tipu was NEVER the king of Mysore. The real king was Khasa Chamaraja Wadiyar.

Tipu sultan like his father Hyder Ali was supreme commander of the army. Why was karnataka celebrating the birthday of a general and not the King ?

This was one of the reason the Nizam refused to give one of his daughter in marriage to Tipu.

The question is not whether he committed atrocities but it was a targeted atrocities against Hindus.

Not true, it was also targeted Christians. He hated christians as much as Hindus, probably more.

Tipu Sultan was a historic figure, hanuman and his birth is mythological,

The false propaganda being spread by the Hindutva Sanghis over Tipu Sultan is reaching outlandish proportions.

who is Tipu Sultan ? He was not a commander but the Badshah (Emperor) of Mysore

Tipu was never Badshah , he was always the commander of the army.

That is why the British entered into negotiations with the Hindu king of Mysore, the Wadiyar and after defeating tipu, entered into a treaty with the Wadiyar and continued to recognize him as King of Mysore.

People mistake him to be a "sultan" just because his NAME was sultan

His full name was "Sultan Fateh Ali Sahab Tipu"

Tipu was general from 1783 to 1799.

Khasa Chamaraja Wadiyar was born on 28 Febuary 1774, He was coronated King of Mysore on 27th September 1776 and he died on 17th of April 1796.

The Title of Hyder Ali under this king was "Sarvadhikari" i.e Regent and after his death, Tipu became "Sarvadhikari" i.e. regent.

As you can see, Wadiyar was king before Hyder Ali during hyder ali, during tipu and after Tipu sultan. He was born a king, ruled as a king and died as a king.

Tipu Sultan was a warrior - King, who took on the British, historic fact that sanghis cant digest

Tipu Takes the Throne

While the Second Anglo-Mysore War was still raging, the 60-year-old Hyder Ali developed a serious carbuncle. His condition deteriorated throughout the fall and early winter of 1782, and he died on December 7. Tipu Sultan assumed the title of Sultan and took his father's throne on December 29, 1782.

The British hoped that this transition of power would be less than peaceful so that they would have an advantage in the ongoing war. However, Tipu's smooth transition and immediate acceptance by the army thwarted them. In addition, British officers had failed to secure enough rice during the harvest, and some of their sepoys were literally starving to death. They were in no condition to launch an attack against the new sultan during the height of the monsoon season

from 1760 to 1799, Wodeyars lost Mysore to Hyder Ali , it was after the death of Tipu Sultan in 1799 that the British installed their puppet, 5 year-old Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, as the King of Mysore

This is some random site claiming fantasy as reality.

This is absolute lies since Hyder Ali himself was never king. He was the regent to a 2 year old Hindu king.

Tipu became regent when the Hindu King was 9 years old.

When Tipu died , the king was 25 years old.

If Tipu was really king, he would have dared to kill the Wadiyar king who was but a mere child and declared himself King.

But he was AFRAID to do that since he knew that the people would revolt and kick him out. Which is why he desperately tried to convert the population into islam. This failed and turned the people more against him.

Hyder Ali was chose as Regent because they knew that he would have less of a chance to declare himself king than some Hindu regent.
