Though US drone strikes on Taliban targets in northwest Pakistan have become routine, the group continues to have a presence in the country's south.

Several members of the Pakistani Taliban have been arrested in the southern port city of Karachi.

However, despite the crackdowns, the Taliban continues to use the city as a hub for funding and recruitment.

Amir Latif, from the Online News Network in Karachi, told Al Jazeera that the Taliban are hiding in Karachi.

"It's very true they are in here. Karachi is the commercial hub of Pakistan. They can get finance from many resources; direct funding from their supporters here as well as through illegal funding from outside," he said.

"However, it is impossible for the Taliban to capture land here or establish their own government in line with the tribal regions [like Waziristan and Swat Valley]."

But there are those who disagree - the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party, which represents Urdu-speakers, allege the Taliban have set up base in the mountains round the city.

Pashtuns who live there deny that - for them such allegations are aimed at countering the mass migration of Pashtuns who have been escaping the violence in northwest tribal regions.

Pakistanis have to answer these questions and again consider what Musharaf embarked on doing; removing illegal so-called madrasaas who are led not by kind and genuine religious leaders but selfish radicals.

Start changing the hate indoctrination that Zia Ul Haq left in the hearts of youngsters to inspire war against Soviets. Unless you guys take this seriously, remember even if PAF bombs 1 lakh talibans straight, more will keep coming.

Don't just shoot the people who're brainwashed, try to kill its ideology. Without ideology, a man is nothing; with ideology he's everything. Neither USA/NATO nor Russia nor China nor India can do this for you; the Pakistanis of today must take severe reforms like Turkey if they have to fight this demon of terrorism.

There are many ways. Ranging from internet to direct recruitment.

Who adds funds to their coffers?

Multiple sources. Crime, kidnapping for ransom, car-lifting, drug trafficking money, extortion and bank robberies. The main bulk however is money which comes from rich individuals who support their cause. They may be in Pakistan as well, but a large share of money comes from abroad including gulf.

What is the medium through which they distribute this ideology? What do they say so effective that can transform the tender youth of a country into mindless slaughter machines and suicide bombers?

Jihadist propaganda machinery is quite effective. It's on the internet, blog forums, audio and visual tapes, magazines, booklets etc.

Pakistanis have to answer these questions and again consider what Musharaf embarked on doing; removing illegal so-called madrasaas who are led not by kind and genuine religious leaders but selfish radicals.

Musharraf was not removing the madrassas but registering them and making them answerable to one authority so that there aren't any unregistered seminaries. Another major thing was improvement and monitoring of the curriculum.

Bear in mind, that these seminaries are one of the major source of education to millions. Not all of them propogate jihad and not all of the teachers are pro-Taliban. What is required is strict monitoring and supervision.

There are always conflicts of ideology in any society. However, the jihadists are no longer the predominant group in Pakistan. Any change takes time to reflect the effects and so will it in Pkaistan.
