A kangaroo at an animal park in South China died after being pelted with jagged stones by visitors, while another was injured in a separate incident days later.

The incidents both occurred at the Fuzhou Zoo in Fujian province early this month, sparking outrage among animal lovers online, Strait News reported on Thursday.

An employee of the zoo's animal rescue center, surnamed Chen, said the dead kangaroo was a 12-year-old female. She was hit by a sharp stone on April 4 that injured her left foot, which led to massive bleeding the next day.

A few days later, a 5-year-old male was injured when a visitor threw part of a brick into the animal's enclosure. The zoo's kangaroo breeder, surnamed Zhang, told Strait News that visitors have been known to throw stones to make the marsupials jump around, or to wake them up if they are sleeping. She said kangaroos usually are active from 8 to 10 am and 3 to 5 pm, and tend to rest under trees the remainder of the day.

After learning of the attacks, many netizens called for animal parks to clamp down on uncivilized behavior.

"Animals in the zoo are there to help us better understand them and ourselves. They're not responsible for performing as you wish. Such visitors should be blacklisted," a netizen named "Duomi" wrote on Sina Weibo.

The zoo has security cameras in areas with protected animals, but most are pointed toward the enclosures rather than at visitor areas, which means the offenders responsible for the kangaroos' injuries were not caught on camera.

The zoo has applied to the Fujian city government for funding to install high-definition surveillance cameras. It also asked people to show love toward the zoo animals and to protect them.

Like many other zoos, Fuzhou Zoo separates visitors and kangaroos with wooden fences. Signs warn people not to feed the animals or throw objects.

After the two attacks, the zoo reduced the number of kangaroos exposed in the visiting zone. Now, only three kangaroos can be seen by visitors. The body of the dead female kangaroo will be preserved for display.

"People feeding animals with human food, or touching or scaring zoo animals, are often seen in China," said Sun Quanhui, chief scientist from World Animal Protection, an international nonprofit animal welfare organization.

He said many visitors are not aware of the potential risks to both visitors and animals that come from breaking the zoo's rules.

Apart from raising public awareness about animal protection, those who break the rules and cause severe injuries to animals should be investigated for legal responsibility, he said.

I stopped going to the zoos long ago, because, no matter home "humanitarian" or "feel home" they become to the animals, it is still a form of torture.

So, visiting zoos means, to me, contributing a sort of slavery-show business.

Taipei Zoo is a good example. Animals are literally caged and I guess they hate to be looked at, pictured at, shouted at all day long by thousands of people.

Better die in the wild than be fed in a cage.

Pakistani zoos are even worse.
The zoo should replicate the environment and groups the animals live in, if they can't do that then they should not be given the license to operate. No animal should be caged, specially birds and migratory animals and Killer Whales and Dolphins.

Exactly. So, zoo industry is by default an immoral industry. It goes same with circus tropes in which animal torture and humiliation becomes fashion and entertainment.

And the US has more than its share on this along with Europeans.

Animal reserves appear to be a moral alternative to zoos. But, probably, that's too expensive and does not bring much profit.

It is better to promote wildlife and preservation than spending money on a business that is set up on the unfreedom of animals.

Tencent, WWF to promote ecological conservation in China with digital technology

Source:Xinhua Published: 2018/4/20

Chinese tech giant Tencent has formed a strategic partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to promote ecological conservation in the Greater Bay Area and the rest of China.

The two sides will explore a digitally-driven approach to make the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area a "beautiful Bay Area" as a first step in broader efforts to build a "Beautiful China," according to the signed memorandum of understanding.

"We have entered a new age where digital technology is unleashing its immense potential in pushing forward the international motion of sustainable development," said Leon Guo, Senior Vice President of Tencent Group and Chairman of Tencent Foundation.

Marco Lambertini, director general of the WWF, said they would accelerate the extensive applications of digital technologies in the ecological conservation domain, and strive to create a "China paradigm" by leveraging the country's rich culture of experimentation and its highly dynamic ecosystem.

Tencent and the WWF will commence the partnership with a series of digital-based ecological conservation projects in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. The initial phase of the collaboration will focus on igniting public awareness of ecological conservation, nurturing conservation talent and combating Internet-based illegal wildlife trade.

Meanwhile, the two parties will work on modernizing the study of species diversity by upgrading the traditional data collection methods of pens, paper and telescopes, to a digital database system using Tencent's platform to analyze and manage data on species to formulate the most suitable protection plan.

Tencent has always prioritized ecological conservation as crucial. At the 2018 China "Internet+" Digital Economy Summit held earlier this month, Tencent Chairman and CEO Pony Ma highlighted ecological conservation as one of the five key pillars of the company's "Internet+" model.

Otherwise, the fact that animals do not die in a media-interest way does not mean that animals are not tortured, shout at, disturbed and humiliated in the US and European zoos.

I think it is not possible to replicate the natural environment because then observation becomes unpractical. Zoos are basically animal-demonstration shows. Hence, it is impossible to turn them into reserves. Of course, one of the reasons being, perhaps, lack of money and space.

But, that does not annul the fact that zoos are torture centers, emotional, if not always physical.

is that analogue to better live in a caged society than to die in freedom? which one is more desirabe?

Perfectly fitting analogy when comparing India and say, with Malaysia.
You don't have much of a choice relatively when born and raised in India when, you know the fate of the Indian kids who are 5-year-old or under or the recent case of the horrible death of the 8-year-old girl. Both are already part of the daily living routines of Indians, which keep haunting them with fear, desperation, filth, hopelessness, poverty and hunger. Some of thrm are still chanting: democracy and freedom WTF! and OMG, very civilised indeed.

This is so disappointing on so many levels.

Yes they are scumbags and yet take a look at these scumbags too, elsewhere:

Depend on zoo condition, I can bet some animals are willing to live in good zoo rather than brave the wild for the fight of the survival. End of the day, they are animals and not human. They do not desired so much for freedom but more for adequate food.

And you would lose that bet.

This is unreasonable humanizing animals on your part. Animals are governed mostly by instincts, even domesticated species like the dog. By large, animals in captivity live shorter lives than those in the wild. The ones that live longer are exceptions and the details on why would be beyond the scope of this thread. The bottom line is that open the gates and they will leave even if you leave a pile of easy food in front of them.
