Kamaruzzaman dodges charges

Staff Correspondent

Investigators yesterday claimed that they have enough evidence of war crimes against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

During a marathon interrogation yesterday, the Jamaat leader denied any wrongdoing.

The investigators said they are convinced that they would be able to prove the charges against the accused in court based on his response during the day-long interrogation in a safe house of Dhanmondi.

“He [Kamaruzzaman] tried to dodge the charges when we placed the supportive evidence… but we are convinced that he indirectly admitted his involvement in the crimes,” M Sanaul Huq, acting coordinator of the investigation agency, told The Daily Star.

A four-member investigation team quizzed Kamaruzzaman, an assistant secretary general of Jamaat, on his involvement in crimes against humanity and genocide at city's Mirpur, and Jamalpur, Sherpur and Mymensingh during the Liberation War.

“We placed evidence...print materials, video clips and witnesses' statements before the accused and he responded to those,” the investigator told reporters.

Sanaul said they took notes and recorded the response of Kamaruzzaman during the interrogation and they will place those before the International Crimes Tribunal. He said they will be able to place the investigation report before the tribunal soon.

Kamaruzzaman was arrested on July 13 last year on war crimes charges. The International Crimes Tribunal on June 1 this year allowed the investigation agency to interrogate him for a day at the safe house.

Investigators started interrogating Kamaruzzaman around 10:00am and continued till 5:00pm with a lunch break around 1:00pm. Earlier, he was taken to the safe house from Dhaka Central Jail around 9:00am.

The investigators will quiz another top Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla at the house today.

Jamaat and many of its leaders several times said there was no Liberation War in 1971. They claimed it was a civil war and a war between India and Pakistan. They also said none of their leaders were involved in Razakar, Al-Badr and Al-Shams, responsible for many atrocities during the war.

Meanwhile, Kamaruzzaman's lawyer Tajul Islam alleged that his client was harassed by the investigators before and during the interrogation.

Quoting Meer Ahmed Bin Kashem, another lawyer of the accused who was inside the safe house during interrogation, Tajul said a lamp was kept in front of him while there was no ventilation in the interrogation room.

He also alleged that an investigator pushed Kamaruzzaman when he was getting off a vehicle that took him to the safe house.

Sanaul, however, denied the allegations and said there was nothing unusual in the room and there was no pushing or shoving. He said his lawyer and a doctor were in the next room during the interrogation.

Five Jamaat and two BNP leaders are now detained in connection with war crimes.

Submit SQ Chy report by Aug 1: Tribunal

The International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday directed its investigation agency to submit the report of investigation into the war crimes charges against BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury to it by August 1.

The tribunal headed by Justice Nizamul Huq also asked the investigators to submit the progress report on the investigation if they fail to submit the full-fledged probe report by the time.

M Shahinur Islam, the tribunal registrar, told The Daily Star that the investigators have to submit the report on investigation to the prosecution.

The prosecution submitted a progress report earlier last week. The tribunal on Sunday passed the order after seeing the report.

M Shahinur Islam further said the tribunal did not ask the authorities to produce Salauddin before it on August 1.....

Oh really! Is it this easy my friend. You are supporting to kill innocent people just because they belong to another party. I am sure they would have been treated as hero if they were involve with Awami league. You know the proverb: What comes around goes around.

Shame on you for supporting Awamis ill agenda to destroy opposition in the name of War crime. I guess you would be happy if Baksal resurface.

He is not a BNP, ZIA would be ashamed
if he saw persons like this nowadays get themselves
affiliated with BNP.

How many times did you see me criticize BNPs action?
If he was with AL like in 96, my post would have still
rhymed the same. Its not ALs agenda, its their hypocrisy
and our failure not to finish this chapter once and
for all.

Don't you think after committing such horrible crimes
its his bloody luck that he gets a decent trial?
ofcourse you are right--What comes around goes around.
He should have remembered this proverb back in 71.

Unlike Awami league, Zia had a vision. He united the nation for better. He did not wanted to keep the nation stuck in past. As a result he welcome people for walks of life under BNP including Jamaat, Muslim league to move the nation forward. He did and this is why he still beloved among Bangladeshi.

You are looking at thing with black and white only. Many people did many things in 71 and if you want punish the all of them then half of our population will be wipe out. Remember it was a civil war between pro and anti Pakistan element.

You can go ahead and kill them but have you ever thought what will happen after that? What are you planing to with hard core supporter of Jamaat and Salah Uddin Kader? How will you control the up rise that will drag us down to no point of return. Do not underestimate the discipline of Jamat. Jamaat is just waiting but they will strike of their leader get hang.

I think we Bangladeshi should not think about anything else but development our nation. What done is done. We should focus with all of our energy to reduce poverty which is our biggest enemy now. unfortunately Awami is taking our nation to wrong path. This bickering will continue many years to come.

MILES AMOORE

June 19: The young Taliban commander with a penchant for severing spies’ heads with strands of thin wire dragged 28 of his foot soldiers from a makeshift jail and lined them up against a mud wall at his base.

Pacing along the row of handcuffed men, the fresh-faced 21-year-old — surrounded by bodyguards — drew his pistol.

“You’re about to be punished because you’ve taken money from infidels by working on building projects in winter,” shouted Ferozuddin. He had arrived in the east Afghanistan province of Ghazni in March to take command of Andar district after an American airstrike killed his predecessor.

As the fighters begged forgiveness, Ferozuddin marched up to the first one and shot him in the left knee. One by one he kneecapped the others.

“Ferozuddin is possessed,” said a Taliban judge from the same notoriously dangerous district. “He is more sadistic than any commander Andar has ever seen.”

Kibria Murder
Babar finally charged

14 new accused named after 4-yr further probe

The additions raised to 24 the number of individuals charged with the murder of Kibria, who was also a central leader of the then-opposition Awami League. Ten people were accused in the first charge sheet submitted on March 19, 2005, just three months after the gruesome killing.

The first charge sheet was submitted after a probe conducted by the then government of the four-party alliance led by BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Kibria's family rejected the new charge sheet as strongly as it denounced the first one.....

Of the new accused, only nine are in custody now, said the IO. The detained nine are former state minister Lutfozzaman Babar, Indian national Md Abdul Aziz Butt alias Abdul Mazed Butt, Mufti Mainuddin Sheikh alias Abu Zandal, Huji kingpin Mufti Abdul Hannan, his brother Muhibbullah alias Muhibur Rahman alias Ovi, Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul, Hafez Syed Nayeem Ahmed Arif, Md Badrul Alam Mizan, and Mizanur Rahman alias Mithu.

Kibria, also a former Awami League lawmaker from Habiganj, was killed in a grenade attack on a rally at Baidyer Bazar in Habiganj on January 27, 2005. His nephew Shah Manzur Huda, local AL leader Abdur Rahim, Abul Hossain, and Siddique Ali were also killed in the attack.

CID official Rafiqul was tasked with "further investigation" on May 6, 2007, weeks before the then IO, CID's SP Munshi Atiqur Rahman went on retirement.........

BACKGROUND
After the deadly grenade attack, Habiganj district AL Organising Secretary Abdul Mazid Khan, now a lawmaker, filed two cases in this connection -- one for killing and the other for using explosive substance -- with Habiganj Sadar Police Station the following day.

The home ministry assigned CID's Munshi Atiqur Rahman as the IO of the two cases.

A high-powered government probe committee submitted its report in April 2005 accusing 10 people of Habiganj including some local BNP leaders and grassroots activists.

The first 10 accused are district BNP Vice-president Abdul Quaiyum, Juba Dal leader Zainal Abedin Jalal, Zamir Ali, Tajul Islam, Zainal Abedin Mumin, Shahed Ali, Selim Ahmed, Ayat Ali, Muhibur Rahman, and Kajol Miah.

In his charge sheet submitted on March 10 the same year, the then IO also accused the same 10, and his report was identical to that of the probe committee.

Receiving the first charge sheet, Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Biplab Goswami started a trial through framing charges against the 10 accused. But following appeal by the complainant, the High Court stayed the proceedings.

The complainant in the cases and Kibria's family repeatedly expressed their "no confidence" over the investigation and asked for reinvestigation.

Further investigation was done during 2007-2008 caretaker government regime, following a court order.

Babar finally charged

So, Munshi was in charge of the investigations.

Why has Kibria's family repeatedly expressed their "no confidence" over the investigation ?

Is this a fudged case?

I believe Babur was a close aide to Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia, during the tenure of the previous BNP-led alliance government.

Asma Kibria, widow of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria, has outright rejected the supplementary charge sheet in the case.
