WASHINGTON -- Korea Aerospace Industries and Indonesia have reached a cost-sharing agreement for the development of their next generation KF-X/IF-X fighter aircraft.

The agreement was signed by South Korea's only aircraft manufacturer and the Indonesian Ministry of Defense. Also included in the deal was Indonesian contractor PT Dirgantara Indonesia. PTDI will send 100 engineers to South Korea in May to participate in the aircraft's structural development.

Under the agreement, Indonesia will initially front one percent of the bill, with its contribution set to increase to above two percent after 2017, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Antara News reports Indonesia will fund 20 percent of the $7.2 billion program, which aims to replace South Korea's aging fleet of F-4 and F-5 aircraft. Indonesia will procure two squadrons of the aircraft.

"Successful development of the KF-X will expand bilateral ties between South Korea and Indonesia in the areas of national defense and economic cooperation," KAI president Ha Sung-yong said in a statement.

The KF-X aircraft, referred to as the IF-X in Indonesia, will be designed to be a twin-engine 4.5-generation multirole fighter. Under the procurement plan, South Korea ordered 120 planes, and hopes to sell a further 600 planes to other countries, while Indonesia will receive 50.

The fighter is expected to be completed by 2025.

4.5 gen or 5th gen?

The program has several stage like semi conformal weapon bay in block one, and complete conformal weapon bay in block two. So if it is said as 4,5 gen program, it still can be upgraded into 5 gen as well as the air frame is actually already resembled 5 generation fighter feature. All avionics are planned to have similar capability like other 5 generation fighters.

But we really dont know whether the team will choose to manufacture block 2 directly (full Stealth) or not, so need to wait until the plane is ready for manufacturing process, inshaAllah.

300 expert to learn KF-X/IF-X's manufacturing production

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Some 300 Indonesian aviation experts and technicians will leave for South Korea to learn the manufacture of KF-X/IF-X jet fighters.

"We will send 200 to 300 people to Korea," Budi Santoso, president director of state aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia, said here on Thursday.

The sending of Indonesian aviation experts and technicians to South Korea is part of a contract between the two countries for joint manufacture of KF-X/IF-X jet fighters.

Under the contract, South Korea has agreed to finance 80 percent of the total costs to manufacture the jet fighters, while Indonesia will bear 20 percent of the production costs.

The Indonesian government is expected to spend Rp18 trillion on the project.

"Although we only have a 20 percent stake in the project, we will receive 100 percent of the knowledge to develop the plane. The transfer of technology will reach 100 percent instead of 20 percent," he said.

All the technicians will study the entire program for the manufacture of KF-X/IF-X jet fighters for three to four years in South Korea.

Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said 20 percent of people employed in the manufacture of the first unit of the jet fighters in South Korea will come from Indonesia and 50 percent in the manufacture of the second unit of such plane.

Meanwhile, 80 percent of workers to [produce KF-X/IF-X jet fighters in Indonesia will be Indonesians.

Air frame design is unproven until it puts up for a RCS test. SK, to my knowledge, does not have an RCS testing facility. Perhaps, they will send to the US for testing. Also there is stealth coating or radar absorbent paint. The formula is a state secret and it is impossible to duplicate. Even Russia didn't know the formula for stealth coating. To my knowledge, only China and US have this formula through years of research and trial and error.

This deal talks about investment and work sharing. There are several deals need to be signed as well to continue the second phase of this KFX/IFX program, like deals between Indonesian and South Korean government, Indonesian aerospace with South Korean aerospace, and now Indonesian (MOD and Indonesian Aerospace) with South Korean aerospace.

Indonesia and Korea Aerospace Industries sign deals to finalise KFX investment and workshare

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Indonesia have signed additional accords to facilitate their joint development of the Korean Fighter Experimental (KFX) aircraft.

On 7 January, KAI signed in Jakarta a cost-sharing agreement (CSA) with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and a work assignment agreement (WAA) with Indonesia's state-owned aerospace manufacturer PT Dirgantara (PTDI).

The agreements, announced by the MoD, formalise the structure of the investment and workshare under the second phase of the KFX programme (the engineering and manufacturing development phase). They follow the completion of a joint two-year technical development phase in 2014.

The CSA formalises an earlier agreement over the cost splitting of the KFX development programme.

There are some different between Indonesia version and Korea version:

He added that there would be minor differences between the KFX and IFX.

“The IFX will have a greater range as required by the Indonesian Air Force ,” he said.

“For air refueling, the IFX will use a probe system while the KFX will use a boom system.

“The third difference will be the data link. South Korea will use the US-made Link 16 and probably develop their own while we will also develop our own.”

Budi said Indonesia needed its own data link to allow communications with the Russian-made Sukhoi Su-27/30 Flankers heavy jet fighters.

This is at least 5th thread which I started which talks about some sort of deal between Indonesia and South Korea

you know what, this your fault to posting the same theme of topic discussion into separate threads, don't blame us for your mistake.

This project is separated into several phase, every phase need a Memorandum of Understanding followed by General Agreement for the project between the two respective countries and followed by Agreement between entities who working for the projects. That's why you will see so many signing ceremony before the project actually kick off as this project involving large monies and resources.

These Korea-Indonesia, Japan's 5th-gen stealth fighter projects, should get their own stick thread in here.

OMG F-22 Copy, ripp-off!

well if you said it as rip-off of F-22, i will gladly to hear that, as it means it will become one of the most lethal fighter in development.
