This is from the showroom KACST (King Abdulaziz City of Science and Technology) held a couple of days ago showcasing some of their inventions and programs and an interesting couple of shots from the TV report are making a buzz. Here they are:

A University Project ?

A University Project ?

KACST is one of the four mega research centers in KSA. It belongs to the university true but all its staff is focused on research.

Notice the previous UAV unveiled was by PSATRI another mega research center. So we might see some good competition here.

Here it is undergoing testing by the Air Force:

Also the new kid in the block KARC (King Abdullah Research Center) signed a MoI with Al-Salam Aircraft industries to research MALE UAVs so we might see another prototype or project unveiled soon.

When does the above UAV come into operation ?

Well as you can see the testing photo is of an older version of the UAV and the white one is a more recent version of it so I think it is still undergoing testing and haven't finished development yet.

I know exactly what type of radar will be installed on the OPs first photo UAV because a hint of it's development was already given but only sharp people could pick up on it:

Arabian Aerospace - Selex Galileo signs double radar deal with Saudi technology city

"Saudi Arabia's King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has signed two contracts with Selex Galileo to include delivery of SELEX Galileo's PicoSAR and cutting edge ESCAN radar technologies for joint research, development and demonstration purposes, and a series of training and industrial participation modules centred around SELEX Galileo's world renowned radar expertise.

The PicoSAR contract is the third over the last few months for the compact, high performance SAR/GMTI radar which the Italian owned manufacturer describes as the ideal solution for challenging UAS surveillance applications."
