K-15 test off Andhra coast next month From a submarine

No, Akula-II can-not carry and fire a ballistic missile. Where does it fire them from? Its
launch tubes can only hold the BrahMos or Klub-type missiles who are only 8-8.5m long, but K-15 is
all of 10 meters and requires special cold-launch properties for a successful launch.

I know they are not Arihant and posted just to clarify the configurations .

But had a doubt about the first picture .It was from a DAE powerpoint shown in some DEFEXPO.Thought it must be Arihant.

It isn't. You know the quality of state PSUs in such presentations - they'll draw up a MIG-29 and
say its the AMCA.

Arihant-class vessels (or then any other SSBN) have a hump on thier hull where they store these missiles.
This pic could pass off as a Scorpene anyday.

After the successful trial of AD interceptor missile, DRDO is readying for the developmental trial of submarine- launched ballistic missile K-15 from an underwater platform off the Andhra Pradesh coast in the second week of December.

The much awaited test, scheduled for the last week of November, was postponed owing to inclement weather triggered by a deep depression in Bay of Bengal early this month. DRDO scientists are reportedly contemplating two trials of K-15, one from a pontoon (replica of a submarine) and another from a submarine.

Defence sources said the nuclear capable missile will be tested for the first time from a submarine positioned undersea off Visakhapatnam coast. If everything goes as planned, the missile will be fired any time between December 6 and 8.

The DRDO is eyeing for the successful trial of the missile as few countries have the triad of firing nuclear-tipped missiles from air, land and undersea. The other countries, which have the capability include Russia, the USA, France, Britain and China.

“Scientists are working over time and constantly cross-checking the system, including the launch platform. We want to achieve near-zero circular error probability (CEP) accuracysaid a defence scientist.

The indigenously developed K-15 missile is about 10 metres in length and about a metre in diameter. Its launch weight is about 10 tonnes. This missile uses solid propellant and can carry a conventional payload of about 500 kg to one tonne and also be fitted with tactical nuclear warhead. After its induction, the missile will equip the country’s first nuclear-powered submarine ANS Arihant.

Reports said the K-series missile programme formally began in 2004 as PJ-08 as a tribute to the then DRDO chief and former President APJ Abdul Kalam. The solid-fuel missile had a modest 150-km range but over the years, the missile steadily grew to achieve its desired 700-km range.

“The hybrid K-15 combines aspects of both cruise and ballistic missiles, which use multiple-stage rockets to exit the atmosphere and re-enter in a parabolic trajectory. It flies in hyper sonic speed. Launched underwater, the K-15 surges to the surface and is the world’s best weapon in this class,” the scientist said.

The K-15 is one of the most ambitious projects of the DRDO. After its successful induction, the DRDO would go for the developmental trials of its longer-range K-4 missile to strengthen its undersea attacks. Apart from the K-15, India has the submarine version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in its arsenal.

So K 15 will be armed with conventional or tactical nuke not strategic.

Its understandable, as we have no experience of arming SLBM with Nuke so Fisrt nuclear warheads willb be low yeild tactical ones

BTW it is possible that K 15 SLBM is also desgined to play role of ASBM

INS Arihant can carry 12 K 15 Missiles

Arihant's reactor went critical and is functioning at the required level since last couple of months,
albeit def journos who've no real info about whats going on inside SBC post their own views and
visions on the net to confuse people.

Yes Arihant carries 12 K-15 SLBMs in triple-packed formation is its 4 x missile tubes for cold launch,
the same 4 tubes can also carry a 3500-km K-4 sea-launch IRBM each.

Some sources claim that not Arihant but later SSBNs in Arihant class will be able to carry K 4

With just 700 km range , K15 doesnot sound to be a credible deterrent .

Our best bet will be K4 .

K15 is for me a demonstration and should never be manufactured unless to ensure there are no mistakes in manufacturing. I tought K5 had a longer range, which is why I suggested that.

It looks like they are initially going for K15 . And then to be replaced by K4 in a later stage.

The testing and subsequent induction of the K-15 SLBM will open the doors for the development and induction of more range appropriate systems such as the K-4 and K-5. The completion of the Nuclear Triad is perhaps the most critical task for India. The enhancement of the durability (in the face of counter-force attacks from opposing forces) of our nuclear weapons is exactly what the present and future scenarios in the world and the subcontinent require. If this test proves to be a success then it will validate a plethora of technologies that India has spent a large amount of money, resources and skilled labor in developing and refining. More importantly it will provide tangible and real data to the SFC and the government which will then be utilized for creating an operational and effective schema for the deployment and effective usage of our arsenal.
