KARACHI: Taking notice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s reported statement about the fear of judges while dealing with terrorism related cases in Karachi, the Sindh High Court (SHC) sources said that judges were working bravely and it was the government which was caught in a web of fear.

They said the judges were regularly delivering judgments against the criminals without any fear but the government was itself reluctant to execute the punishment awarded by the courts to the death row convicts involved in terrorism and heinous offences.

Well-placed sources in the SHC said that Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar took notice of the media reports regarding irregularities in senior lawyer Naimat Ali Randhawa’s case and the reported statement of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in which he stated that due to the deteriorating law and order situation, even judges were afraid in deciding terrorism or other heinous crime-related cases.

Sources said that chief justice of the SHC called the relevant record in senior lawyer Naimat Ali Randhawa’s killing case and inquired the concerned judicial magistrate and special prosecutor of the case about the details of the case.

Sources said the chief justice, after perusal of the record and separate meetings with the judicial magistrate and prosecutor of the case, found that there was no contradiction in the statements of the magistrate and prosecutor and no illegality was found in the statement of the witness as recorded by the judicial magistrate, as the same was done in accordance with the law.

Sources said the chief justice expressed satisfaction that proceedings were being conducted in accordance with the law and it was observed that judges were delivering judgment without any fear and trial courts were continuously awarding punishment to criminals in accordance with the law. However, sources said it was observed that the government was not implementing the court judgments regarding execution of death row convicts involved in terrorism related cases, which could be used as a deterrence to curb crimes in the society.
