JSM-J renounces separatist ideology -DAWN - National; March 16, 2008JSM-J renounces separatist ideology
Bureau Report
HYDERABAD, March 15: The Jeay Sindh Mahaz (Junejo) has made amendments to its constitution, manifesto, political terminology and party flag to give a new direction to the nationalist movement in line with the needs of fast changing world and rid it of negative tendencies and reactionary attitude.
The convenor of the partys central ad hoc committee, Abdul Khaliq Junejo, said at a news conference at the press club on Saturday that the word Sindhu Desh in the partys constitution had been replaced with sovereign, autonomous and prosperous Sindh while the symbol of axe in the middle of party flag had been replaced with the map of Sindh province.
He said that the amendments had been approved by the central executive and central committee of the party and finalised by the partys national congress held in Radhan on March 8 and 9.
Mr Junejo said that the supreme leader of nationalist movement G.M. Syed had announced a programme for political, cultural and economic independence of Sindh and founded Jeay Sindh Mahaz to achieve the objectives.
Syed Saheb wrote a book titled Why Sindhu Desh and for what purpose to publicise and explain his programme. He laid emphasis on two points - international situation and the characteristics of nationalist movement, which included workers training and impeccable character, Mr Junejo said.
He said that it was an age of Cold War and the world was divided into two blocs - Soviet Union and America but many changes had since taken place with the dissolution of Soviet Union.
The world had become unipolar, which was now heading towards a multipolar world and many new regional powers had emerged on the world map, he said.
Similarly, nationalist movements had undergone many changes but regrettably all the changes were negative. Knowledge and enlightenment were replaced with ignorance and reactionary activities and wisdom and arguments had been made subordinate to brute force, he observed.
He said that national interests had been sacrificed at the altar of personal interests and extortion had become the order of the day. The slogan of Sindhu Desh and the symbol of axe, which was part of the flag, had become synonymous with extortion, he regretted.
The situation had compelled the JSM to make amendments to its constitution, manifesto and terminology to maintain its individuality and keep pace with the demands of fast changing world.
He said that the JSM would continue to struggle for the restoration of democracy, secularism and equality in the province and oppose terrorism, fundamentalism and racism.
After the ANP, whose manifesto (to me at least) advocates autonomy within the Pakistani federation, this is a major blow to the those who pntificate about "seperatist movements tearing Pakistan apart". The BLA attempts at an insurgency too are a far cry from what was attempted in the 1970's, and for now remain stuttering and devoid of broad support.
Given the economic and strategic importance of Sindh however, and coming on the back of the assasination of BB, an event that many thought would reignite the seperatist cause, the JSM decision is a pragmatic and welcome one.
