The AGS Nichinan is the 5th Oceanographic Research Ship of JMSDF and it collects ocean data necessary for anti-submarine warfare and mine warfare. In order to improve the observation capability, the ship adopted the electric propulsion system which produces less noise.

The Muroto is larger, however, standing at 4500 tonnes. She is a heavy research ship.

Wow that's a solid research vessel.

@Nihonjin1051
Sir how many such ships are planned.. Also a side question, normally when such a ship which is important from research perspective on subs and mines, will they have armed escorts? Will they work within a protective zone..

Do you see them venturing into open seas and conducting research?

The Nichinan is part of the JMSDF's ORS Fleet, which is oceanographic research ships, there are 5 ships in this class the Shonan , the Nichinan, the Suma and the Futami. These work in conjunction with our oceanic surveillance ships , the JDS Hibiki and the JDS Harima, which have a dual role of research and also surveillance. We have also the Muroto, which is a cable laying ship and has a dual function as a research vessel that usually cooperates with the ORS fleet. There are about 5 ships of the Muroto class.

As to your query about the ORS fleet number, officially there are 5, but I believe we are constructing more. Currently our interest is on the mapping of the sea floor under the Arctic waters. So in that case ORS Fleet ships usually are under escort of our ice breakers, and under the escort of 1 or 2 DDGs. (a mix of Takanami, Akizukis).

will they have armed escorts? Will they work within a protective zone..

Here is a picture of the JDS Muroto flanked by the JS Inazuma and the JS Hatsuyuki. Usually a research vessel like the JS Muroto will be escorted by 1 or 2 destroyers or destroyer escorts (frigates).
