Ormara is situated roughly 360 km due west of the port city of Karachi. it is also the new location of Jinnah Naval Base (JNB). i had the opportunity to visit JNB over the weekend on the invitation of the Director- JNB.

the foundation stone laying ceremony was held in 1988 by the then PM, late Benazir Bhutto and since then nearly 50-100 acres of sea shore has been land filled to make way for JNB.

What is this base used for ?

the infrastructure of JNB is being built according to the Navy's priorities and requirements. once completed it will probably be the most important Naval Base of the Pakistan Navy. its fleet of submarines and other surface vessels will be permanantly located at JNB, away from the congestion of the seaport of Karachi.

RDS Mianwali is a remote data sensing facility which monitors sea-going traffic on the arabian sea lanes.

Well that is good and if we can also start building ships and submarines here that would be a plus point

Hammerhead Point, 1600 ft above sea level. the weather is quite cool up here, almost like a hill station.

Baywatch Point - glad to see that there is humour in the navy-wallas.

Who are you among these four ?

great pictures however the structure looks crude and 1930's that exist there , for construction prespective of basis our construction models need to change how we construct bases for living and also for military areas

the base has a long way to go - relax mate.

Good. This base can play a very vital role in any future conflicts with India also it would be easier to provide security here as compared to Karachi.

Firstly it moves Naval Assets further way from India than at karachi. Then the entrance channel to Karachi is both narrow and shallow. It can be blocked quite easily, as I used to see. The congestion created by Merchant shipping in Karachi Harbor does not help either.
Check with @Rashid Mahmood about all that, he is sure to be familiar with all of that.

@fatman17; RDS Mianwali has been active for quite a long time now.

Agree with @Capt.Popeye.
JNB is be the main Naval Harbour for the PN in times to come.
It is naturally protected from the sea and does not have the problems of Karachi harbour.
PN has an airport of its own there.
The growing potential is tremendous.
Given money and time, it will transform into a very important naval harbour.
