ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Air Force (PAF) celebrated on Monday the induction of indigenously-manufactured JF-17 aircraft in the No. 2 Squadron (Minhas), replacing some of the oldest F-7Ps in its inventory.

PAF hailed the occasion as “a major milestone towards self-reliance and enhancement of operational capability”.

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, speaking at the ceremony at PAF Base, Masroor, said: “Induction of JF-17 in No. 2 Squadron will help create the much-needed strategic balance.”

The replaced F-7Ps at the No.2 Squadron served there from Aug 1990 till Aug 2015, when the induction of the new fighter aircraft was commenced. With the induction now complete, PAF boasts operating four JF-17 squadrons. The other three squadrons having JF-17 aircraft are No. 26 (Black Spiders) Peshawar, No. 16 (Black Panthers) Kamra and Combat Commanders School Sargodha.

The No. 2 Squadron, which started as fighter conversion unit in 1956, and later became the Air Superiority Squadron following the induction of the F-7Ps, has now become a multi-role squadron after getting the JF-17s.

It is also entrusted with the task of safeguarding maritime boundaries and protecting sea lines of communication in coordination with the navy. The JF-17, which has beyond-visual range attack capability and has been equipped with two C-802A anti-ship cruise missiles, is believed by analysts to be a good choice for the maritime strike role.

two ashm is not a good combination I believe to even penetrate a CIWS alone These missile would need to be fired in hexa quantity which means with this combination 3 jf17. with todays electro optical and radar systems CIWS alone are a serious threat to missiles. impressively they are in excess of 20mm which means even a single or two hits from hundreds of bullets coming means end to missile.

For Antishiping Role, the combat fighter such as JF-17 planes would needs is

1. Long Endurance.
2. Excellent EW warfare capability.
3. Excellent Navigation and guidance capability above sea.
4. Low altitude flying capabilty to fly close to the target, and radar avoidance.
5. Powerfull sensors and Radar.
6. Net centric, to get updates from Survellance planes and UAVs.

@Quwa few question because you have an excellent knowledge.

1. No body talk about the low flying charateristics of JF-17, with high G. Could you ellaborate on that.
2. Is it confirm, that JF-17 would be used as maritime strike platform and is declared officially.
3 Any change which you expect wrt to the PAF JF-17 regarding the avionics, and EW and SAR pods.

Actually their are only 3 squadrons the CCS has 6 Fighter Jets which are taken from these three squadrons. First 16 BLOCK II are with Air Force and Air Force is flying them and they would formally inducted in upcoming months. @Windjammer

. . .
with 8 new subs + agosta b subs and new inducted zarb anti ship missile in huge numbers whether its local made or just named it has minimum range of 300 km that is sure and now with C-802 in air.naval blockage from indian navy is impossible now.
Also i forget to mention CM-4000AKG

The JF-17 is definitely being primed for maritime duties, integrating the C-802 and having it cleared for usage was openly touted by the PAF since around this time last year. In fact, at No. 2's ceremony, Navy officials were present and the ACM spoke about how the JF-17 would be a crucial aspect of supporting Pakistan's maritime security interests.

I can't speak to the low flying performance of the JF-17, I'm just not privy to such information; but I do think the emphasis will be on enabling the Thunder to have longer-range munitions, maybe not now, but in time. The network-centric work achieved thus far via Link-17 and the stationing of KE AEW&C at Southern Air Command make longer-range AShM a natural route, in my opinion.

The JF-17 Block-II reportedly has an ECM suite made by Indra (Jane's), I just don't know what that entails, i.e. is it limited to just the ALR-400 RWR, or does it involve the complete ALQ-500 DRFM-based kit? Not sure about what dedicated EW pods the PAF is using or planning to use with JF-17 either. I would have thought Chinese (KJ300 or KJ600), but we'll have to wait for PAF to confirm the matter itself. SAR pods and photo-reconnaissance pods are not on the table, though given the scale of Block-III, who knows!?

?

I believe both C802 and CM 400 AKG are inducted?

the c802 is inducted but the cm400 akg has been delivered and was tested in china but when the Pakistani air force was interviewed regarding the cm400 the response was "no comment" which in short means yes the no comment probably due to the the very high missiles capability.

.
. .
why were they pics of pakistani jf-17 in pakistan carrying the cm400?

1- All of those pics were taken in China during 'testing & integration phase' .....

2- We have not contracted CM-400 does not mean that we will not induct it in future as well .... it just the current status.

3- it's an 'option' which in future we may or may not avail, but it adds value in terms of Options of different arsenal availability with JF-17 strike package for us or for any International buyer

For Antishiping Role
1) One must know what kind of threat it faces?

For PAF and PN the threat is a naval blockade of shipping lines in the Arabian Sea and the Straits of Hormuz. To protect the JF -17 is highly capable.

2) What additional assets are available?
PAF and PN both have reconnaissance aircraft available.
PN also has Anti-Shipping deep strike platforms available.

PAF can also carry out deep strike with Areal Refueling of the assets it has available. This capability enhances the range of JF-17's and other platforms.

@Quwa

Though this is of an exercise and unrelated aircraft. Still it shows the capabilities of PAF.
