TOKYO —

The Ministry of Justice plans to begin testing high-tech facial recognition software at automated immigration gates at Haneda and Narita airports from Aug 4 until Sept 5.

The tests will be limited to Japanese nationals holding passports with IC chips embedded in them, according to Japanese media. The software will scan facial data from the chips and match it with photos taken of the arriving passengers at immigration gates, the Nikkei reported.

The ministry’s plans are just one facet of larger preparations being made for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Although an increase in the number of immigration officers will be needed, the software will assist with quickly separating and documenting the increased traffic through international ports.

During the test period, the ministry is asking for the cooperation of all travelers coming in and out of Haneda and Narita.

Another aspect of the software being tested is that it will attempt to photograph individuals as they walk through the airport, the Nikkei reported.

The ministry will present a summary of the data to the cabinet by the end of the year and determine whether or not the software will be appropriate for permanent use.

Ministry officials said that many people arriving at Narita airport — both foreign nationals and Japanese — have complained about the long lines at immigration, especially during peak times when several aircraft arrive one after the other. Adding to the delays are numerous cases where fingerprint scanners don’t work the first time.

Can you please find me the details of the company, which provide the software to Narita Airport? I'm interesting in this kind of techniques.

I have high hope for the future technology. Now, facial recognition, maybe the next 30-50 years, DNA scan from our skin particles in the air. Good jobs Japan, you are making us living in the sci-fi world already. But I am still waiting for my Chobits :smitten:

Nice, I am currently learning some Japanese and plan on visiting Japan on the next 2-3 years. I really admire your people and culture. My favourite show is Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai. Love mister Matsumoto Hitoshi.

Hey friend. The fact that there is a Face recognition software installed in Narita Airport cannot give a conclusion that its Japanese software, even if it is a japanese firm installation. You need to find the original software provider. If its Japanese research, Japanese company, then yes.

I'm doing Ph.D on "detect and track people from camera" as well. Therefore, I am particularly interested in this tech.

I think that the technology might have been lying around the table for about 3-4 years, but Japan takes the first step and put it to practical use. Of course I give my regards to the one who invented this technology, but I also feel like Japan deserve some praise for being the first to experiment it.

I learnt the Hiragana and Katakana 3 times by now but still cannot remember them all. Yet I think the Kanji might be easier to remember. And my Japanese grammar is super meshed up. Can only recognize a few words you said anata = you, nihonjin = Japanese and tomodachi = friend.:-)

Yes, Kanji is probably the easiest. Its just Chinese characters (Hanzi). You learned it 3 times eh? Good ! Were you able to practice it there in Viet Nam ? ^^

Here is a phrase for you:

Anata wa watashi no tomodachi desu ka = You are my friend

Watashi wa anata no tomodachi desu = I am your friend

I thought desu ka mean question? I can understand simple sentences like these, but reading is my worst nightmare. My listening might be better. Nihonjin wa katai desu :-)
