I think it may be a good idea to show the world how much Japan assists BD with no financial gain to itself. The money is given on soft loans that are repayable over 40 years, 10 years grace period, and a nominal interest rate of just over 0%.

I will start off with the Matarbari Power Station and will add others later in this thread.

This will even surpass the scale of the Padma bridge as the total cost is projected to come to some 4-5 billion US dollars.

The coal-fired power station will generate 1200MW when completed and this is only the start of a master plan to generate up to 10GW of power in total from this site by 2030.

Thank you Japan!

Dhaka Metro Rail:

Bangladesh, Japan strike deal for $2.8 billion Dhaka metro rail

"DHAKA: Bangladesh on Wednesday signed a loan deal with a Japanese development agency for construction of the country's first-ever metro rail system, costing $2.8 billion and intended to ease Dhaka's traffic jams.

The project will cost an estimated $2.8 billion, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Bangladesh chief Takao Toda said, adding that his agency will finance 85 per cent of the cost at an interest rate of 0.01 per cen"

1st phase will be a line of 20.1-kilometre ground and elevated railway, that will stretch across Dhaka from north to south with 16 stations.

The plan is to have 3 lines in total to serve the whole of Dhaka but that will probably not be completed till around 2030.

Good to see that many major countries are helping Bangladesh grow.....Japan...India....! :)

India needs to help itself first since it is worse off than BD in many ways.

We are kind hearted generous people, we don't forget about our smaller neighbours while we are growing, that's why we were happy to extend a USD 4 billion soft loan to Bangladesh, and even went on to convert USD 250 million of it as pure grant, and that's why we always stood by Bangladesh in its times of humanitarian crisis! :)

$4 billion??? When?? It was $1 billion and not a soft loan but a line of credit with some hellbent conditions, one of which was that 90% of the credit had to be used to purchase cheap Indian products, that's the reason why you see BRTC is full of Indian buses.

It was 2 loans of USD 2 billion each @1.75% interest for 20 years, out of that USD 250 million has been converted to grant, Bangladesh don't need to pay it back! :)

And what do you understand by "Line of credit"? :)

Rain Man is jealous that we Bengali Muslims have our own country while he has to make do with India. He cannot have a Hindu Bengali nation. We are going to build one if the great countries in the world. We have surpassed Pakistan in GDP per capita and now India is in our sights. This is what I love about an ethnicity having its own country. They get to develop it, mould it in the way they want rather than having to compromise with a bunch of other groups.
