Top Japan negotiator says it is not considering signing RCEP trade pact without India
TOKYO (BLOOMBERG) - Japan is not considering signing a regional trade pact without India at this juncture, the top Japanese negotiator said on Friday (Nov 29), ahead of a series of diplomatic exchanges in the coming weeks that include a visit to Delhi by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

India announced this month that it was withdrawing from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), citing the deal's potential impact on the livelihoods of its most vulnerable citizens.

China said that the 15 remaining countries decided to move forward first and India was welcome to join the RCEP whenever it's ready.

"We aren't thinking about that at all yet," Deputy Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry Hideki Makihara said in an interview with Bloomberg.

"All we are thinking of is negotiations including India."

Mr Abe has sought to beef up ties with India across a range of fields to balance China's regional dominance.

Japanese and Indian foreign and defence ministers hold their first joint meeting in a so-called "two plus two" format this weekend.

Both countries are also part of four-way security talks with Australia and the United States called the Quad, a move that Beijing has complained could stoke a new Cold War.

"It is meaningful from the economic, political and potentially the national security point of view," Mr Makihara said of the inclusion of the world's largest democracy in the pact.

"Japan will continue to try to persuade India to join."

I m talking about the Japanese "government" after US occupation.

Well, I can tell you a lot of things that several other "Governments" have done that Japanese Govt. has not., despite achieving far far more in the SAME period.

And these are not the stuff.. you would feel proud of.

Whats your point ?

Countries are waking up to the CCP threat.
Funny its always the same handful countries "waking up to the Im not saying China but China threat". Usually after getting some kick in the butt or threats by their U.S. "ally" to make sure their dont use their "freedom" to do anything the U.S. regime doesnt like.

How many times must India and Japan need to "wake up" until you guys stop pretending they didnt always hate or have a complex about China from the start.

So you think what happens in Hong kong stops China from ascending to the top, I like the way you dream.

Ascending to the top in what terms? Economically, militarily, soft power, brand China?

You claimed China was getting stronger. The situation in HK & Taiwan, plus election results in HK fly in the face of that comment. Yes, those situations don't make you stronger. It hurts your soft power, brand china, ability to bring HK and Taiwan into the fold, which is a national security issue and hurts you militarily too. One more thing, losing countries like Japan and India also hurts your RCEP efforts
