TOKYO —

A group of major Japanese firms are planning a test flight next year for the nation’s first homegrown stealth fighter jet, a report said Tuesday.

The consortium—led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries—is developing a jet that has similar technology to U.S.-made F-35 stealth fighters, with a prototype set for a test run in January, the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper said.

About 39.2 billion yen has been invested in the project, said the report, which did not cite sources.

Following the initial flight, the jet will undergo about two years of testing at the defense ministry with Tokyo set to decide on whether to buy the plane by early 2019, it added.

The story could not be immediately confirmed.

Japan, which sees a security alliance with the United States as a cornerstone of its foreign policy, has long depended on U.S. manufacturers for military hardware.

But the conservative government has been looking to expand Japan’s military influence, and has relaxed a self-imposed ban on weapons exports.

Last month, Tokyo loosened the bonds on Japan’s powerful military, proclaiming the right to go into battle in defense of allies, in a highly controversial shift for the officially pacifist country.

The development of a homegrown jet comes amid worsening tensions with Beijing over rival claims to islands in the East China Sea.

Japan said last month that its military scrambled fighter jets a record 340 times in the three months to June in response to feared intrusions on its airspace.

Let's see how it goes. Japan has a lot of catching up to do after years of neglect it's military industry has faced.

@F-22Raptor ,

Well even if you have only 1/10 the problems of the F35 you are going to have to listen to a chorus of complainers and doomsayers.

But good luck...hope it doesn't turn into a headache.

The US should have allowed Japan to buy the F-22, and this is the logical result of our shortsightedness. Anyway, good luck to Japan with the development--has there been any discussion of who potential customers for the F-3 would be?

That is right, we have been lagging behind. Here's to the best! Kanpai!

As of now, not yet, the emphasis now has been on the success of the trial run. If it bears fruit, then, we shall see.

any pictures???

nice development and nice pics.

I hope the F35 deal can be scraped. There's always home grown ones.

Scrapped? No, it has been finalized. We have already made 42 orders of the F-35A, with current ministerial talks of an additional 100 F-35As, and some F-35Bs.

The JASDF is planning to retire our fleet of F-15 Fighters within the next 10 years. The F-35A, will be replacing it. And with the subsequent development of the Mitsubishi F3A, F3B, we can eventually implement it into the JASDF Air Fleet.

F35 is not superia look at its specs. The only concern is the time gap but I don't feel that's an issue.

It provides a wealth of strength and brings with it attribute that will maintain the superior firepower of the JASDF and the JMSDF.
